Alcohol

I suffered from uti's a lot when I was younger but since then I've been fine.

Now suddenly these last few months as soon as I drink alcohol, I'm crippled with cystitis the day after.

I only drink on occasion when I'm out which isn't much but I am only 25, so the thought of not drinking because I'll be in agony the day after is haunting me.

I've tried the sachets and cranberry juice and they are not affective.

Anything else I can try to ease the pain? And is this a common problem? As it just started out of the blue for me.

I take the pill and pantoprazole for my hiatus hernia, but I have been on these for years with no problems.

I also don't have any problems after sex usually, it's literally just started after I've drank alcohol.

Any advice would be great as I'm going a family party tonight for my boyfriend's birthday and dreading the thought of drinking.

    Hello Natalie,

I have suffered from recurring UTI's for about 4 years and I'm 22 now. Alcohol triggers UTI's I'm afraid, I don't drink as It's not worth the pain for me but you could always have a drink then a glass of water after each drink and make sure you go to the toilet frequently so that the alcohol isn't sitting in your bladder for too long.

Also you mentioned cranberry juice...I wouldn't drink too much of it, I dont touch the stuff anymore as the companies fill juice drinks full of sugars and sweeteners which make your bladder highly acidic then it becomes irritated. Milk always works for me as there isn't any acid in it so it will balance out any acidity in your bladder.

I am not a doctor but I have had to treat myself over the years using trial and error as the doctors didn't know what to suggest or do to help me.

    I hope this helps!

Okay, avoid acidic things--especially cranberry juice.  Get something called alkalife, and add drops to your alcohol.  It says 3 for water, perhaps you could add 5 for alcohol.  I wouldn't add more than that since it has potassium, and that might mix up your electrolites possibly?  But then, don't eat any other acidic things that day--eat lots of green veggies, and nothing citrus or coffee or chocolate or tomato.  Try that and see if it helps.

    Hello Natalie

I also find alcohol a huge problem usually the day after a night out I have terrible cystitis that usually takes over a week to disappear sometimes longer. I found that i was usually getting bad symptoms after drinking any sort of wine especially sparkling. I try not to drink very often because its awful suffering for weeks afterwards, try and drink water in between alcoholic drinks ( fun killer i know) or try alcoholic drinks that are less acidic. Also i find with a hangover i barely drink any water so the lack of fluid intake usually results in UTI or cystitis.

Recently ive started drinking vodka with a little cranberry juice and sparkling tonic and havent had any problems so maybe try something like that

    xx
