Alcohol and Prednisone.

Is it okay to have a few drinks on New Years and not jeopardize my health anymore then it already is due to the high dose of prednisone I am on? I have not had a drop of Alcohol for four months now and I was just curious if a few drinks would be stupid or not. Thanks to anyone who wants to advise.

    Hi Snaggler,

I've not stopped drinking while on Pred. I was on 20 mg almost 20 months ago and had a few drinks per week without any problem... currently on 7mg and still have a drink almost every day.

Drive carefully though on New Years eve. As I always refer to it, it' \"amateur night\".

Thank you for your prompt reply Rick. I think I will have a couple drinks at home with the family. I guess the main reason not to is the sugar content in the alcohol.

Hi Snaggler! We've talked about this loads on this and the other forums    in the past. The general conclusion is that there is no real reason to stop drinking when on pred unless there are any other reasons in the way of other drugs - although if you are on prednisone that is processed by the liver to make prednisolone which is the active form of the drug. Maybe that makes your liver work harder anyway.

However - as Mason noted over on the other UK forum, if you haven't had a drink for a while it may go for the knees rather faster than it used to! He had a glass of wine at a Christmas party and found himself rather wobbly and asked if anyone else had had a similar experience. I used to give up alcohol for Lent, a mere 6 and a bit weeks, and always found it took a while to get used to a drink again. So if you've been on the wagon for 4 months - be careful!

    Happy New Year!

    Hi Snaggler,

it must be you who posted as Flame on arthritis.ca and I gave you the address to this forum. Unfortunately, the Canadian forum is more or less dead.

While I was on pred, I continued to drink as before and on the Canadian forum, we had a nice chat about Canadian and New Zeeland wines some years ago. I couldn´t find any negative points about using alcohol. On my trip to the US that I mention in \"My story\", my wife and I really followed the \"Sideways Trail\" for some days - the movie Sideways had been popular then. This was while I was on 20 mg/day and only two weeks after I started.

Like Eileen, I think you should be careful at first as you haven´t had alcohol for some time.

    Happy New Year to all!

Yes, I am the one of the same FLAME = Snaggler. Snaggler is actually my cats name and she is good comfort.

I had two beer last night and instead of feeling anything normal, all it did was get rid of the horrible neck pain and pain in my head.

Alcohol is a good pain killer.

Maybe part of the problem is tension and the beers helped you relax? Whatever it was - a nice result!

    Happy New Year!
