Hi lee i suggest you listen to your doctor. And try to calm down. I guess a beer would not be a problem. You can call him and ask him if you have doubts since some drinks contain big amount of alcohol and others are lighter. Relax and enjoy your life.

if i am correct propanolo is a betablocker not an antidepressant. Correct me if i am wrong?

I am not familiar with propanolol.  But I take antidepressants, I used to drink on them. Not a good idea. What I was told by doctor, is it makes them not do what they were prescribed to do.  The only thing I can say is people with anxiety and depression have chemical imbalances in the brain.  Best not to drink in excess if anything, because make chemical imbalance worse thus more anxiety and depression.  One also has to be careful when on calming drug, then drinking alcohol which is a depressant.  Could affect the heart to beat slower and cause cardiac arrest.

I'm sorry to have to correct you, but there is proof that there is absolutely no correlation with anxiety or depression and having a "chemical imbalance" in your brain.

This term is thrown around quite often and it's frankly untrue. Anxiety is psychological, and can be caused by many different factors. For one person, the factor could be something as small as say, swimming or heights. If you have a bad experience from something, and it triggers a panic attack, the brain automatically programmes itself to be alert when experiencing that thing again.

For some, like a lot of people on this forum, we have anxiety about anxiety. Where some people may have a panic attack and brush it off, for others the anxiety is caused by the very thought of anxiety. This is why certain people get symptoms throughout the day, because they're constantly on high alert.

If it was caused by a chemical imbalance, there would be no need for psyches, as it would be physical instead of physiological.

Back to topic though, as propanolol are just beta blockers, drinking is fine with them. People usually get prescribed propanolol for anxiety when they're anxieties are health/heart related, once the palpitations stop, the worrying about it stops. If you're on an SSRI I would try and cut down the drink. My partner drinks on them, but shouldn't.

Sorry Howll but there are plenty of studies to back up the fact that anxiety and depression can be do to a chemical imbalance.  Why then do people benefit from taking SSRI's?  I am living proof.  Sometimes people can benefit from seeing a therapist and learn skills to change this balance.  Every thought is a chemical change in our brains, which in turn we react.  If I tell my fingers to move with my mind that is a chemical change in my brain.  If I am correct, yes not everyone should run out for a silver bullet to their problems.  Medication should be used when all other avenues have been exhausted.  Again, do some more research on the fact anxiety and depression can be a chemical imbalance!

The proof when one is not thinking positive or rationally, their is a chemical imbalance.  Not everyone has to will power and tools, to change their way of thinking as miraculously as others would like.  That is why SSRI's and anxiety medications are aids to allow a person to get to a state where they can actually think for themselves, and start doing CBT, etc. to get out of their misery.  http://psychcentral.com/news/2006/11/09/depressions-chemical-imbalance-explained/398.html

In some ways i agree about the anxietiy part. There is fear in this world and it can trigger anxieties in people. Like the fear of spiders or the fear of being alone, or the fear of heights but we all grew up with these fears from childhood. People can be fearful of being around other people and it could be the way we were treated as kids. There are some people that have anxieties about taking tests in schools there are some people that have anxieties about elevators and they take the stairs instead. These fears are brought on phsycological.

With Depression that is different, having an atoimune disorder can trigger depression like hypothyroidism, or hyperthyroidism, depression can be caused by hormones like when you are in menopause, or postpartum depression can happen after you have a baby these things are the chemical inbalance

Depression can also be phsycological too can it can be brought on by the way you were raised or treated as a child or as an adult

So with depression it is both ways hormonal inbalance or phsycological
