Alcohol and Sertraline

What is everyone's experience with Sertraline and alcohol?

I've taken Sertraline 3 times now and have always seen pretty good results. However I drink several nights out of the week. Often it's just a glass or two of wine but sometimes it's a bit more excessive. I take 50 mg's for general anxiety.

The day after heavy drinking I can definitely feel a bit more anxious. Just curious on everyone else's experience.

when I used to have a drink when taking sertraline I think, no I know, I used to think too much the next day if I was OK & made myself anxious! Mind you it didnt worry me when I was drinking - lol. I just gave up drinking some years ago as it just wasnt worth it.

I think when you are just starting on the meds it can mess with you - when my daughter was in the early stages, if she drank, the next day she was a mess - plunged her further down into her depression. However, when she had been on it for a while, and went to higher doses and her body was adjusted, she didn't have a problem, and her psychiatrist who was monitoring her meds said it was ok. However, I would always warn her "you know, alcohol is a depressant!" - I don't know if it's a different story with anxiety though. My expierence with her was with depression.

i definitely feel increased levels of anxiety the next day after drinking. i have been on sertraline for just over 5 months now. ALCOHOL ultimately is a depressant and can add to anxiety , so i am wary of how much i drink .

I learnt the hard way. I do not have any tolerance for alcohol these days, which isn't a bad thing because I save money and am healthier. I have the occasional drink but I have to be sensible (spritzer over just wine, and just the one). If I have too much I get super anxious the day after, no hangover at all, but I just don't feel in control. It's easy to say don't drink at all, but I think you just need to find your limit. I found that the buzz you get from alcohol at the time, really isn't worth the backwards step the next day. I'm on 100mg now, I increased after I had a meltdown after a friends birthday, which involved more drink than I could handle. I spoke to my GP about it and he said that sertraline makes the effects of alcohol feel double, and as Melanie and Sandi have said booze counteracts the meds.

    Hope that helps!
