Alendronic acid

I have been taking alendronic acid  for 5 weeks now. Over the last week I have had a sore throat and now acid indigestion. Tried to make an appointment with doctor but they can't see me until April when I happen to be going on an extended holiday. Not sure whether to take myself of this.

Maybe do some research. I did and decided not to take AA.

there are two lines of thought on here. One side supports the taking of AA and the other side argues against taking it. Both are worth reading through as part of your research.

What is your t score? Less than -2.5 is osteopenia and AA should not be even considered with that result

Have you had any broken bones recently?

Do you have any issues with swallowing or have reflux?

Read up on other thread on here on this subject and on the Internet.

Thank you Kathleen after researching as you suggested I'm not happy about taking this medication Can I ask if you are taking an alternative?

No, I have decided not to after much research and consideration. I am taking natural stuff like the list I mentioned.

Research has now shown exercise does build bone as well. Weight bearing exercise like walking is good if you are able.

Bone strength is different from bone density as well.

All the best with your decision.

Hi. This can be a side effect of taking these type of med. i myself have had no problem but I drink a glass of water before taking the tablet and a further ltr over the next half hour. If I were you, I would stop until you have spoken with your GP or specialist. It may be related, it may not, but just to be sure. If it is not the meds, you can start again after the reassurance from someone who knows. Its the calcium that affects me, but we are all different. Meantime, have a great holiday

Have you had a dexascan?  You can only take AA for a five year period as it build up in your body.  There are a number of side effects, all listed on the data sheet that came with your prescription, some state go back to your MD/GP others you have to grin and bare frown  - sorry!

    Best of luck John

Thank you for replying. Apparently I can take an anti acid tablet daily. After doing some research I'm not sure I want to keep taking these. It's very difficult to know what the best course is as you take one tablet to solve one problem then have to take another  to solve the side affects!!

I understand completely. I have always hated taking any medication all my life. Now, after suffering the incredible pain from 2 fractured vertebrae, over a 10 year period when I was not diagnosed, I felt I needed to give the meds a chance. I see no other way forward as I have always done all the things recommended to avoid OP. I have read all the fors and againsts. I have spoken to the professionals and kept an open mind. I will do everything to avoid another break and hope my next scan shows I have made the correct choice. This problem you have, may well settle down. It might not. I was very sleepy the first 6 months, on the day I took the meds. But, I want to live my life and do everything I have always done. Take care, but dont become paranoid.

I had a reaction to the AA. It started with a bad sore throat and eventually I ended up in bed five days out of 7. It took four months before someone diagnosed that it was the drug. I came off it and waited a few months and then went on strontium renalate. I was fine on that but could only be on it for fourish years. Then went onto Denosumab injections. I have no reacted to that but managed 3 years. Now have a vertebral fracture after 3 years of none! I have 12+ fractures! This one taking forever to heal! My advice stop taking it. If here in UK they won't acknowledge a drug reaction. If you feel it is you can fill in a "yellow card". That will register yr reaction but don't expect yr gp to do it. Side effects just get worse and even if not the AA stoping for a but won't hurt. Enjoy yr holiday

Problem is stopping does not fix as they have a half life up to ten years or so!

wow, 12 fractures! What is your t score from your bone density scan?

Hello, I wanted to offer some input from my use of alendonate, I know it is very important to take this with plenty of water standing up and remain up for approx hr after taking, I have been taking now for over a year and after researching it comes to my attention that if a patient has GERD or any esophagus issues, it turns out I have now a condition called barrets esophagus which is a precancerous condition and I am concerned if alendronate may be the culprit. Please write all your questions down and discuss with physician, it wouldnt make sense to trade one condition for another and physicians are only practitioners, they dont know all the answers, we are the most important person in our health by being proactive..
