Hi All! This coming Monday I'll be tapering from 15mg Pred to 12.5mg, I've picked up my prescription only to find an addition of Alendronic Acid Tablets 70mg in my bag from the pharmacy! I didn't actually ask for them!,,, so should I take them without querying it with my GP?? Has anyone else been given them in this way??

    Hi Andrea,

When first diagnosed with PMR, I was told that I would have to take AA.  After just taking one tablet I had a bad reaction.  Another similar drug was prescribed, but again it didn't suite me.  A couple of months later I had a dexa scan, which showed that my bones were very good.  The lady doing the scan was extremely concerned that  AA had been handed out to me withoust first having a scan, because she said that in the UK, it is only to be given to people aged over 65 (I was 54) and as a last resort for thinning bones. It shouldn't really just be handed out with Prednisolone, without good reason.

They were told that it would prevent bone density loss and was perfectly safe to give as prophylaxis - but although bisphosphonates have been in use for over 50 years, they have only been in mass use for about 15 years and that is when you find out the nastier side of any drug. The people who REALLY know are like your lady - "why is it being used without good reason?". Unfortunately, the non-bone specialists are more convinced by the marketing.
