Allergic?

In March this year I started getting gritty eyes. Oh well, it’ll go away I thought. But it didn’t; it got worse. Then it felt like someone was poking them about ¾ towards the outside of the lower lids. My eyeballs would bump into these soft ’lumps’ if I tried to look sideways. Diagnosed as Blepharitis I tried most of the ‘cures’ listed here. Hot compresses gave some relief to this ba”^**&^ condition for a couple of hours at a time. The prescribed eye ointment was no help and was a medieval torture to put in.

Then after 3 months I contracted Conjunctivitis! And what felt like sties beginning.

Another Doctor diagnosed it as Allergic Conjunctivitis (see Google images) and prescribed eye drops and antihistamine tablets (Allacan film coated tablets. 10mg Cetirizine Hydrochloride).

An hour after taking the first tablet I sensed a lessening of pressure under the eyes - I hadn’t previously noticed, and felt the need to swallow more. I guess my sinuses were draining down the back of my throat. That signalled the start of my recovery.

Six weeks on and apart from a little grittyness first thing in the morning the antihistamines, taken one a day, seem to have tamed all the eye problems.

Who would have thought a 69 year old man would suddenly become allergic?

Hope this helps someone,

Be well.

I can only offer my heartfelt sympathies.

The last Doctor I saw was a locum, so it’s not his budget, but he did say that if it wasn’t better after two weeks then I should see a specialist to find out what I was allergic to. Maybe that’s something you could push for.

      Be well.
