Allergic to antibiotics and I am in absolute agony.

Hi there all. I have been suffering for a while. First dr gave me Nitrofurantoin only to get culture back from lab to find out they needed to give a different antibiotic. Being highly allergic to many medications it was a hard task. Then they gave me Levofloxacin I was allergic to it. I then thought that I will go natural and make my body kill the bugs. Now I have blood coming from the urethra. Also have pain there as well. Back pain, burning painful cramping, temperature, asthma has taken a nose dive. Changed my suprapubic catheter. Slow output. Blood on tissue and obvious blood in the toilet and night bag. Should I stay on my natural theme or try and cope with the side effects of taking the Levofloxacin? Any idea's would be appreciated. Many thanks.

    Hi Pammi,

I have every sympathy with you, as like you I am also allergic to nearly all antibiotics. It’s best for you to see a GP doctor urgent, as the infection could be reaching your kidneys. Pylonefritis is a very nasty thing and can be life threatening. I also don’t advise you to go back on the other awful drug. If you do some research on the side effects of that drug, you could end up in a worse condition , disabled like me and many others. It causes major damage to tendons etc. You definitely need to seek medical advice and also see if D- Manose could possibly help you at all. Keep us posted, but don’t take chances with your kidneys.

    Best wishes,

    Sam x

Just an after thought to my previous post, you can look at something called AZO, especially if you are in US. This is fantastic for bladder pain, but use it sparingly. X

Dear Sam, thanks so much for your reply. I've been like this for about a month. My heart goes out to you too, I dread infections as Dr's say well we don't want to send you in for iv so pick a tablet that caused less havoc on you. I couldn't believe my ears. Hope you're well. Thanks again I shall mention these medications to my GP. I'm based in the U.K. take care. Xx

Your symptoms suggest a bad infection. Don't carry on suffering as you don't want to cause problems with your kidneys etc.

If you live in England ring 111 for advice, go to a walk in centre, Urgent Care Centre or Accident and Emergency.

Whatever option is available to you please get some advice/treatment, don't treat yourself with painkillers they may help with the pain but don't cure problem.

Take care and please keep in touch.

I'm sorry you are going through this as it's not an easy task. There are several medications out there for UTI have you been on Bactim? If you are truly allergic Drs need to know. I have talked to several and they all say antibiotics is what kills the bacteria. I took a lot of azo with my meds to and drank cranberry juice. But I would highly suggest going back to the Dr until they find something you are not allergic to. With a catheter are you not draining the full bladder is that why you have one? If so you need an antibiotic not just for the bladder but to keep from having a kidney infection. Keep us posted. And I pray it goes away soon for you.

Many thanks ladies. Update, been back to Dr's, there's a infection in the bladder, kidneys, chest and throat. However, no help as they've lost the results from first testing so having to do second batch. Should get a decision later this week. Managing on pain killers only. Thank you both for advice and support.
