Allergy to new mattress?

Posted , 2 users are following.

I got a new mattress a week ago and think I might be allergic to something in it. I have been airing it with window open and fan on every day since I got it but when I go in the room my chest feels tight and if I touch it my hand is burning and itchy. The smell seems to be getting stronger every day despite the constant airing. Has anyone else had an allergy like this? I notice it's got something called Purotex in it and am not sure if this has anything to do with it.

You will probably find that the mattress contains polyurethane.I had patch tests a few years ago

and found that I am allergic to polyurethane. Many things contain this and usually made in China

-but not everything. It is the fumes from the polyurethane that leach out.I have had to send back

many items as they affect me badly. You should check the label and investigate.Good luck because

a lot of manufacturers are not very helpful.

Thanks for the reply. The mattress has a soft top with something called innergetic latex on it which the salesman told me was a natural product. It's also supposedly endorsed by Allergy UK so I stupidly assumed would not contain anything in it I could be allergic to. The mattress could contain polyurethane which reading up on is definitely something I could be allergic to. I'm not sure if the shop would agree to exchange if I say I'm allergic to it so might stuck with a bed I can't use for 40 days before I could qualify for an exchange under their policy. I wouldn't even know what to change it for now as I'll be scared of further allergies. Thanks for your help!
