15 weeks postop from total hip replacement on my right hip. 5 weeks post op have been getting rashes/hives for going on 10 weeks Started small dots to major hives and rashes on my fingers, hands and arms, to my toes, ankles, legs and thighs...never my trunk yet. No one can derermine the cause yet...a biopsy on both of my arms from a dermatologist on Tuesday with results next week. Then i read you can be allergic to Titanium hip prosthesis...this is getting worse by the day and getting more frequent and more severe. Anyone at all know about this, symptoms or pictures if this has happened to you? I am l getting desperate at this point for help.

i had a sensitivity to the metal implants osteolysis and metallosis . Chronic abrasion between the metal components caused the release and of metallic particles, starting a local chronic inflammatory reaction and systemic absorption of metallic particals. revision was done replacing the ball, with ceramic and poly cup. i still have some hives and itching mostly controlled by antihistamines. have both hips replaced and one revision.

the xrays should help show any issues after a few months or aspiration of the area checking for any fluid . i am sympathetic with the metal, sensitivity you may be showing due to the metal. hives and itching is miserable hopefully the pain meds have been excluded from causing any reactions . i hope it's not a allergy to the metals and there is a solution found soon. . let me know how the biopsy turns out . xxxxHOPE

    Hi Marian

I don't know what medication you're on but my GP recently upped my ibrupofen to naproxen.

About 3 days into that i got hives, started in my scalp, then my neck, arms, stomach, chest, back and legs.

I stopped taking naproxen for a couple of weeks then gave it another go...... same thing!!

You can be sensitive to many things, but it is quite rare.

The only way to find out is the dermatologist test that you have had already, nothing to do but wait for the results really.

I was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder (I am one of about 65 in the entire UK) which prevents my blood from coagulating. I have had the blood taken, and am also awaiting results.

Probably best to try to 'get off' any medication to see if that helps at all, and use something soothing on it like calomine lotion.

I have even stopped taking vitamin supplements & fish oil as they have been found to affect the liver in some people. Again it is very rare, but I am now taking every precaution.

There is a blood test for titanium allergy. I believe it is called the MELISA test. You could ask about that to see if it is causing the problem, at least then you can discount it if the blood test is OK.

I had right hip replacement 11 months ago I had to have allergy tests done before my surgery as I knew I would break out with rash & blisters if I wore any jewelry and even the metal buttons on my pants would break me out test showed I was very allergic to nickel, I had to have all Titanium doing well no break out from it so far, but you need to have allergy test done it may not be the Titanium it could be the screws that have nickel in them causing your problem best wishes to you hope you find out soon and get relief from it .
