Allopurinol and gout attackes

Hi. Any help or advise would be really appreciated please. After having regular gout attacks my doctor has put me on allopurinol. I had to take colchicine for 2 weeks before I started taking one tablet (100mg) of allopurinol per day. I had to continue on the colchince along side the allopurinol for a further 2 weeks in case the allopurinol caused a gout attack (which it did) I had numerous attacks in two months but had no pain relief from the doctor except paracetomal. I had a blood test after 2 months on allopurinol then the doc raised the allopurinal to 200mg per day, still didn't prescribe additional pain relief. I am due another blood test in early december but i'm not sure i am going to continue on the allopurinol as the attacks have been constants since i have been taking 200mg. I have had severe attacks in my toe, then ankle, most recently in my keft elbow and index finger, which were both inflamed and painfully unbearable. my finger was so swollen i went to nhs direct who prescribed diclofenac. when this attack was finally subsiding the gout decided to attack my right shoulder , after speaking with nurse at my doctors surgery i was prescribed dihydrocodeine, along side paracetamol and ibrobrufon. I know i have come a long way on the allopurinol but the thought of the doctor raising the allopurinol again after my next blood test brings me out in a sweat. I don't know how much longer i can bear the pain. I am getting anxious, short tempered and basically quite depressed now. any advise would be really, really appreciated. Thanks.

You must be completely free of gout pain before taking allopurinol

    for at least three weeks.

I think that is the ideal. But my specialist said that if you can take colchicine, a couple of tablets a day will stop the pain. The chances are the allopurinol will bring on a(n) attack(s) anyway.

Feel for you, am also a long term gout sufferer, my attacksare not very frequent in last few years and stem mainly from an injury to the affected ointment, like too much golf. Am recovering now from one. suggest you research prednisone .

Recent research shows this is much better than the stuf you are taking alas. I did before.

    got instant relief

Wow, I just read alot here.. Haha. Well SYFY I do feel for you. I have suffered from chronic gout for 12 years and when I mean chronic gout I mean I get gout attacks every 1-2 weeks without fail in both feet, both elbows and both knees, virtually after everytime few days that I ate I'd feel that twitch we all know so well when the attacks first start to errupt.. The pain...? There's nothing like it. It as though my limbs are being slowly dismembered with a blunt butter knife! Anyways I had learnt alot about Allopurinol from this thread guys thank you for that I will be going back onto them, I had stopped as it kept causing more frequent attacks. (like one attack a week wasn't enough..) Now SYFY I hope you read the reply of timothy12884 as he is the ONLY one to mention the drug Prednisone!! IF ANY OF YOU GOUT SUFFERERS WANT FAST EFFECTIVE PAIN RELIEF OF GOUT TAKE 1-2 TABLETS OF PREDNISONE A DAY AND IN COUPLE DAYS FLAT THAT PAIN IS GONE! But like many will say and myself included it is not a fix for gout, it just gives great relief so we can still perform our daily tasks. * Also Prednisone is a steroid drug as timothy12884 pointed out so over use of this drug does have side effects * I was recommended by my doctor not to take the drug longer than 5 consecutive days, so implemented properly it can make a HUGE difference on ones day to day life. Lastly, as of late my kidneys have been aching when I get gout attacks now. It started a month ago and I know that constant gout can cause kidneys stones!! Im so not looking forward to that day.. In the words of Michael Buffer "Let's get ready to rumble!" But if I go back to using Allop maybe I can get all these crystal deposits to leave my system haha but from what I read of GoutBuster its like cleaning the drain so those crystals will loosen up and move around the body causing attacks but after 12 years of pain I'm prepared to go through with it just to get that crap out of my body!! Good luck to us all smile

      Allopurinol will clean the drain.

      Colchesine will reduce the pain.

Have you not been to a doctor in 12 years of gout?

If your kidneys ache you need to get that checked out before taking Allopurinol or colchesine (or probably anything else!)

You've been going to the doc and he never prescribed you Allopurinol etc? If so: go to a lawyer and sue him for every last penny.

What have they been giving you?

Yes, I know I should and I will but to be honest I am a little scared of what i might hear. But yes I will see the doc soon. Thank you for you're concern rusty.

They gave me Allop the first time it happened but it cause me alot of distress, I was informed it may cause attacks so I stopped using them but I was never told it will flush the system out thats why it could cause an attack or I would have stayed on them many years ago..

70% of people stop taking the Allopurinol as soon as they get attacks....I seriously wonder if doctors themselves understand why it causes attacks.

Interesting fact about Allopurinol - its side effect is that it lowers cholesterol!

NB A *serious* side effect of allopurinol is in a few patients it causes a very serious dermatological problem - if you get a rash with it - stop straight away.

      You are big!

However, your gout would be helped if you either grew another 8 inches or reduced your weight.

Agreed on the weight dropping it will be a huge help. A few years ago i tried to quit smoking managed to pull off a 9 month cold turkey after 18 years of 2 packs a day i was a rugby and basketball player always on the bulky side though Maoris are just built like that but sadly i gained 55kg in those in that 1st year of quitting and got scared and started smoking again but never lost that weight...

      Losing weight:

      Step 1: buy a bike

Step 2: use it for 45 mins a day

..... give up the hangi :-)

And for your health give up smoking - get an electric cigarette.

Maori are more effected by gout than pakiha.

Haha yes thank you all future plans of mine bought a rowing machine a little ways back def plan on using it and yes gout is more prone to us many of my family and friends have cases just not as severe as me. Thank for the help rusty you take care too mate smile

I reckon a bike is better than a rowing machine in that you can do an hour or so on a bike using the largest muscles in the body - almost without realizing. A rowing machine is conscious effort. But hey, one man's meat is another man's poison.
