Allopurinol unexplained bladder pain

Hi all, i would like to share something with you that might be of interest.

Here goes, i will try and be clear. I went to my GP in 2013 for pain in my penile area. I was diagnosed with prostatitis so was put on a long course of high dosage cipro antibiotitics. Things did not get much better. I had private medical so got referred at my request to a urologist. He did the usual DRE and flow tests by this time my flow was poor and still in pain. He did low tests and bladder tests and all was norma function. He did say that I had BPH and as I was also on Tamuslosin at the time and was not wishing to be on tablets I agreed to a Turp operation consisting cutting a hole through my prostate and doing a BNI bladder neck incision. Ok the operation went ok with the usual urgency multiple infections on moreantibiotics. The pan for the most part got better until about 2 to 3 months after the operation so after several months i got another procedure to remove scarring. Again not too bad no infections this time. I then had no pain for 2 to 3 months and one again the pain came back (I mean this pain was up there with the worst I had experienced in my life). Ok my wife lost her job so no longer had PMI to cover going back to see the consultant. At the time I also was getting a lot of skin irritation at the head of my penis and on the Glans area. I saw every GP under the sun who could not help so after 23 months in unbearable pain driving the 35 miles to work and 35 miles back stopping at public conviencesto relieve the pain insisted they put do through the NHS Urology route. Afrer another year i saw the consultant but not the one i wanted to see. (in Scotland we cannot pick our consultant) anyhow I was on a waiting list for diagnostics. 16 weeks later after explaing the pain I was taken in on a cancellation at last christmas when lots of people did not want to go in to hospital they had a look and could not find anything wrong. The consultant offered me another BNI and one again put on a waiting list supposed to be 12 weeks. I got an apointment for my operation which was all due to go ahead for 16 weeks later. Now by this time i was pretty fed up. As soon as I drunk anything 10 minutes later i would be bursting in pain to go to the bathroom. I found a Journal explaining that if someone has been on Allpurinol 300mg for a long long time in my case 20 years then you can experience bladder pain. I took a copy of this Journal to my GP and he said he would look in to it. He contacted me about 3 weeks later asking me to contact him for an appointment to discuss. In which he said well it is very limited but there is evidence and so come off the tablets and give it a try. I have been off the Allopurinol for about 3 months no pain. The question is was that the problem in the first place. Anyhow I can now go hundreds of miles without going to the bathroom. So success for me hope this might help someone else.

Thanks for the info Norman.  Sounds like the medication, Allopurinol was the cause of your pain and related problems.  There are so many uncertainties with surgical and pharmaceutical treatment of urological problems.  Self education and being very deliberate and exhaustive in your research before going down a treatment path is absolutely crucial.
