hi all.  Doing ok at this stage,  seem to improve daily at the moment.  Walking indoors without crutch, getting up and down stairs more easily. Still a bit wary of bending.  Any one else have any numb spots?  My operated leg is still a bit numb lower down I keep rubbing it hoping it will improve soon.  Sleeping on both sides now no bother thank goodness.  Hope my six week check up will be without problems.   Happy Easter to all hope it's pain free.

    Hi

I'm at about the same stage. Had a nice long lunch out with friends yesterday and today went food shopping with a friend. Feel I've overdone it a bit and am exhausted!

I've not slept on my side yet, wasn't sure if 'allowed'? Are there any guidelines? I have numbness in both legs but think this is normal.

    Happy Easter to all

      HI Barbara:

I had my hip surgery on Mon. Marh 9th.  I am still very weak.  I'm beginning to think this is not normal  I am 56 years old I don't know if this makes much difference.  I don't think I could walk to the end of the driveway, let alone go out to lunch!!  Good for you.

As for sleeping on your side my doctor has told me to stay using the pillow between my legs until I see him at my 6 Week appt.

It's interesting that you have numbness on both sides .  That sounds like a nerve being pinched to me.  Maybe from lying on your back so much???

      P.S. I love this site!

      Happy Easter

      Hi Mary & all

Yes I love this site too. It has made me feel less isolated.

I use the pillow under knees for comfort but still on my back, maybe tonight try the side with pillow for support. I was told to lie on operated side first.

Maybe you should talk to your GP re tiredness? If you don't mind me asking how old are you? I am 62.

I definitely get tired more easily, and know when I need to rest. Listening to what your body tells you is best advice.

My op was 2 days before yours. Are you going for follow up Physio?

      Rest well, take care

Thanks for replying.  I am 56 years old.  I have begun physio already.  I had a PT come to my home for the first couple of weeks and last week I started going to our hosp. physion department.

I had to have a unit of blood during my surgery and my blood pressure was very low while in hospital and they started me on iron pills now.  I guess perhaps I've still got low blood???

I do listen to my body, my husband and daughter have been carrying my chores.  I just feel my husband is getting stressed and I need to standup for a while.

      Thanks Barbara,

      you rest well too!

    Hi Marlene:

You must be so excited  Don't worry about the numbness when a nerve is severed the nerve has to regrow from the beginning (spine maybe) and nerves grow a mm a month!

I am just finishing my third week post op.  I'm quite worried that something else is wrong with me because I'm still very weak.  And, when I exert myself to maybe just wash dishes that have been put in the sink.  I have to grab a chair and sit for a time because I feel faint.  I don't know if this is normal or not.

I know they had to put me on iron pills because my blood pressure had dropped  conciderably after my surgery.

I am 56 years old.  I have been throuig many surgeries but I don't recall ever feeling so weakened.

Happy Easter to you as well.

Mary don t worry too much. I was 56 when I had mine and at 3 weeks I was still having to have an afternoon sleep. I wasn't even walking about on 1 stick. Though I had other complications. I still get physically and mentally exhausted 17 months post op. It wasn't until about 8 months post op that I began to gain my normal strength. You need to listen to your body. If you are tired don't fight it. Your body has gone through one hell of a trauma!!. You will feel better eventually maybe lack of iron may make you more prone to tiredness. I still use my pillow between my legs on my side. I never sleep on my op side as had 3 ops in same place so with scar tissue it hurts.

I didn't go on to one stick indoors for 3 months and only got rid of the other after having more physio about 8 months. Sadly for me I still need two crutches when out.

      Hi Mary,

I was like you, weak after my op with low haemoglobin and low blood pressure. It took a few days to stop feeling dizzy every time I stood up. Low Hb can obviously lead to anaemia which in turn leads to extreme tiredness. Ask your GP to do a check blood test to see if something like that could be behind it. I work in clinical haematology at a hospital so am rather used to dealing with blood disorders. A simple blood test should show up anything wrong. Most things can be corrected with a course of medication so don't worry.

      Take care.

I'm 20 days post op and the top of my thigh is,still numb, no feeling what so ever. I've been using a gel pack chilled to keep the swelling in check after walking and exercise. I'm hoping I get feeling back but seems to be a waiting game at this point.

I'm the same, Susan. But in both thighs and also a tingling/pins and needles feeling especially at night.

On a previous message someone suggested potassium would help, maybe bananas. I think it seems to be fairly usual and my instinct tells me it is probably muscles that need strengthening and nerves that need healing. I'm going to talk to Physio about it next visit
