Almost sure I have a hernia.

For the last 12mths I have been back and forth to the doctors trying to find out what is wrong with me. Symptoms are bloating/ feeling of something on right hand side upper stomach, which causes shortness of breath, burning sensation radiating up my back, burping and flatulance and sometimes struggling to open my bowels. More often than not, this starts late afternoon and can sometimes go on until I go to bed. Once asleep, it doesn't bother me.I have seen a total of 5 doctors, all students, and I feel as though they are not listening to what I am saying.

I did get sent for an x-ray because of the burning in my back, I was found to have mild spondilitis, but I don't believe this is causing my burning. The same doctor examined my stomach and said he couldn't feel a hernia. I have had an ultrasound scan for gallstones, and all blood tests I had came back normal. The doctor I saw last week must have just heard 'constipation' and told me to take senna , and said to come back in 2 weeks and they may refer me for camera to see if its diverticulitis. I've looked this up, and my symptoms are nothing like this!!!

As it happens, I have made my appointment, and because this doctor is on holiday I actually get to see the senior doctor.

Reading through discussions on here, I am leaning towards me having a hernia.

You poor thing! Your story is similar to mine, I was scanned for gall bladder and kidney issues, had a colonoscopy which was clear before I was given an endoscopy which discovered my hiatus hernia! It took two years for that to be diagnosed. I would ask for an endoscopy although not a pleasant procedure it finally got me my answers! Good luck

I really don't like the idea of an endoscopy,  was hoping a scan would show it up sad

Sadly not an endoscopy is the only way to show up a hiatus hernia as far as I am aware, it wasn't a nice experience for me but I had worked myself up, I was put to sleep in the end as I played up abit. Where as my nan who has had several thinks it's a doddle!

Shazz... seems like you need to get to a real doctor... one that's done this for a while now... your symptoms sounds like a hernia to me. Not that I am a doctor, but hey... support your fellow man! I have had many of the symptoms you do and I have a 2cm hiatal hernia... good luck, I hope you find a doctor who actually knows his stuff!

    Hi Shazz,

Sorry to hear you are struggling. I know just what you are going through - I too have been unwell for the past 12 months with symptoms similar to yours.

I have had umpteem tests including 2gastroscopies (if this is offered to you make sure you ask for sedation my second endoscopy was much more bearable after sedation)ultrasound, CT scan and bloodtests. Was finally diagnosed with a small hiatus hernia - 3cm - but as yet surgery has not been offered to me.

You should keep on pestering doctors - sometimes they are not very sympathetic - this is far more than a headache!

    Best wishes,

    Lynne

Well I have given up with my GP, after being with the same surgery for almost 40yrs I have made the move to a different one. Just waiting for confirmation of registration to the new one.

When I went and saw the senior Dr, he just wasn't listening to me. All he was going on about was my high cholestrol, which I know I have. Then he started typing in H-pylori, so I asked him what it was, even though I already knew and I haven't any symptoms of it, he didn't explain, just told me to get a sample bottle from reception. In the mean time his mobile phone went off, and while talking to whoever he printed off a prescription for lansoprazole, no explanation, just pushed it towards me. I was so annoyed, that I just said to him, actually, there is something else I need to ask you, he ended his phone call and looked pretty put out that I had dared to interrupt his call!!!!  I walked out to the reception desk and told the girl that he was the most ignorant b*****d I have ever met !!!!.

I came home, looked on the internet for the h-pylori test only to find that you shouldn't take any ppi's for two weeks prior to the test, yet there he was giving me a prescription for them and telling me to get tested at the same time.

I really should have known better than to think seeing him might get me somewhere, as this same Dr, prescribed my late mum pregablin which was delivered to her as she was housebound, turned out they were for a patient with the same christian name as my mum. Luckily, I was at her house the next day and questioned why she had been prescribed them.

Anyway, rant over, hoping for better things at new surgery.
