Altered mental state after acute pancreatitis

Posted , 7 users are following.

I can't find anything on the Internet about this. I had severe acute pancreatitis. I presented with continually losing consciousness, throwing up,and altered mental state. I was admitted for four days and it's been about a week since I was released. My mind is gone! I can be in the middle of a conversation with someone and just forget everything we were talking about. People get irritated when they walk into a room and forget what they were doing. I forget on my way to the room and it happens more often than not. I have no focus and no short term memory and I just have this whole sense of mental dullness. Am I the only one and if not, how long does it last. If you know anything about this please respond.

You can get a form of pancreatitis that affects your brain, its very serious though. Im not sure you would still be alive if it was that.. but maybe there is a mild form of it, let me look it up quick.... cant find the name, join pancreatitis survivors on fb and ask there. There have been some that have had this.

    Hello Nate,

Well you can express yourself very well here. So, I don't think your mind is gone! We all experience 'senior moments' from time to time.I don't know how old you are, but having gone through a traumatic experience recently in hospital you might just be preoccupied with the whole thing and eventually you should settle down to your normal self once again.

Maybe you could discuss this with your doctor ? I have never heard of pancreatitis being linked to mental confusion on a large scale. But, I'm not an expert, although I have pancreatitis, and sometimes I'm so fed up with the whole thing that I also forget things. I'm retired and have a lot of time on my hands so I try to keep my mind occupied elsewhere when I'm feeling OK by learning Italian and playing chess on my computer. Doctors advise people to keep the brain active. Perhaps if you were to write things down it might help ? Also, my doctors are always advising me to get out in the open air and walk as much as possible. This might help in regaining your focus. It's best to remain positive and believe that you will make a good recovery as many people do.

    The best of luck,

    Pete.
