Alternative to General Anesthesia for Laparotomy?

Posted , 3 users are following.

I’m due to have a laparotomy to remove a 10cm ovarian cyst and possibly my left ovary and tube. I’m VERY against having general anesthesia because of a past concussion that I still have a few symptoms from.

Can I insist that I have an epidural or spinal block with sedation for this surgery?

Funny, I asked the same question only because I was terrified of being put under! My surgeon said he couldn’t because I was having open surgery. (All went fine).

I would ask for sure! It can’t hurt. I would be surprised if they couldn’t. I’m curious to know! Maybe someone else will have the answer.

I’ve read several women getting them with the same type of surgery, and women with c-sections (which is a Laparotomy) have them all the time. I don’t get why they can’t do it.

Hi, I was offered an epidural for my ‘open’ surgery but opted not too.  Two other ladies did have it though and were pleased with the results and were able to go home a lot sooner.
