Am I at risk for anemia?

Posted , 2 users are following.

I have Lyme disease, leaky gut and an unresolved intestinal issue that cause me pain every time I eat. I am also deficient in several vitamins. I take supplements, but I'm not sure if they are enough. I have lost a lot of weight recently and am not getting all the nutrients I need. Should I be tested for anemia?

If your doctor has not already done a full range of blood tests on you I'd be apalled. When did you last see your doctor?

I saw him last week, but the last time my blood count, etc. was tested was about five months ago

Please go back to your GP immediately to review your symptoms in detail and, if necessary, seek immediate referral to a gastro/endo specialist.

If your case has not already been fully and recently investigated then it is important not to waste any time.  Insist on having printed copies of all your existing blood test results (showing what the "normal" ranges are considered to be to compare with your actual readings) and get another full set of tests right away.  This should ensure that your GP registers your concerns.  You don't say how old you are, but many older people carry such respect for medical professionals that they are reluctant to ask questions or complain.

If you feel your GP is dismissive of your symptoms, demand a second opinion immediately, and change practice if necessary to get it.
