Am I being thick?

I gave up alcohol 6 months ago as I wanted to lose weight but gained over a stone and a half in the process! The sugar craving is on a par with heroin addiction ( or so I imagine). Anyways I saw my doctor who prescribed orlistat but didnt give me much dietry advice except limit carbs and have sausages as snacks!!! 

I have since learnt I am supposed to eat a low fat diet, surely if I did this I would lose weight anyway so whats the point of pill popping?

I have been taking the pills but still cant give up the chocolate! 

Anyone got any advice for me about the point of taking these pills please? xxx

    Hi julie welcome on board firstly it really depends on how badly you want to lose weight! The tablets wont help if you dont work with them. I started a new discussion last night saying how sometimes i feel down how i want to eat some fatty food but i wont at all even have a treat because i desperatly want to change my life and lose weight, you have to make these sacrifices or they wont work!! 1st why your doctor said snack on sausages is beyond me there full of fat and on these tablets its the fat you have to cut down on chocolate is a definate no no you must stick to 5gms of fat per 109gms each item of food and no more then 15gms per meal try and have 3 balanced meals a day and take a tablet within an hour of each meal this will help reduce the fat content in your diet its really hard i know but thats the only way it will work is to work with them try and incorporate a bit of excercise too cardio will help burn the fat have long walk even that helps if you crave sugar try asda caramel rice cakes 41 calories or muller chocolate heaven deserts there very sweet to help with your cravings plenty of veg and fruit and try and cut down a bit on carb intake if you have a phone where you can download apps get myfitnesspal enter tour details it will tell you how many calories a day to stick to i have 1200 a day you can log everything you eat it will work out your calories and tell you how much fat protien and carbs your getting good luck hun hope you manage ok keep udating us to let us know how your doing xx

    No you aren't being thick. All of us have had to figure this out and get advice as it takes some getting used to.

    I am staggered your doctor would tell you to snack on sausages. Sausages! My gosh, they are one of the fattiest foods around. And limit carbs? I cannot believe a doctor would tell you to limit any food group other than fat as that is not the way forward. And chocolate - no!

    The way forward is to re-train yourself to eat healthily and exercise and cutting out any food group is a way to failure as your body will just crave it all the more. You have to learn to eat all food groups moderately.

    So to the rules when taking Orlistat.

    1. Combine it with a proper diet plan - personally I think weight watchers is best.

    2. Depending on your weight stick to a certain calorie allowance per day. I had 5 stone to lose so started on 1400 calories but I am now on 1200 per day.

    3. Within that calorie allowance have no more than 15g of fat per meal (3 meals per day) and within that 15g of fat per meal, no single item should have more than 5g of fat per 100g. For example, if for lunch you want a tin of soup, look on the back at the kj/s. Look at the section that give your the grams of fat per 100 grams. If the soup has less than 5g of fat per 100g then you can have it. Say for example it has 2g of fat per 100g and the whole tin is 400g, then that tin of soup will have 8g of fat in total (4 x 2 = 8). I agree with your comment about low fat diet would lose weight anyway, so what is point of tablets as I thought think the same thing. However, my thoughts on that are the consequences of eating too much fat are a) you won't lose weight and b) you will have nasty toilet experiences and accidents. And trust me, they are horrible side effects. Personally, I believe these tablets don't do much other than make you stick to a very low fat diet because of the fear of the nasty toilet moments if you don't. So, whatever works, right?

    4) Only snack between meals on zero fat foods such as muller light yogurt, rice cakes, fruit and raw veg, cup a soup, marshmellow, sugar free jelly. But you must also count the calories as these snacks can add up seriously and if you overeat calories you won't lose weight even on low fat.

    5) Take your measurements: boobs, midriff, waist, stomach, hips, thighs, above knee, top of calve, ankle, top of arm as sometimes your weight on the scales may not alter but you can still be losing cms. This has happened to lots of people including myself (but only take your measurements once a month as they don't alter in a week really).

    6) Exercise. Sorry if you hate it but it really is key and as you lose weight the amount of exercise has to increase. I hated exercise passionately. I cannot tell you how much I hated it and there was no way on earth I was joining a gym of class of any king so I got a bike. It was hell to start with. It nearly killed me. I thought I would be sick several times in the first few months just through the panting and effort it took, fell of several times and really hurt myself on 2 of those occassions etc etc. But I have now reached a level of fitness that is fantastic and I absolutely love going out on my bike. Exercise really does have to be incorporated into your diet plans and preferably something that you can do as part of your everyday life.

    I hope this helps start you off - the hard work is all down to you I'm afraid, but like the rest of us on these forums, you will have good days and bad, but keep talking to people on these forums as we are all going through the same things.
