Am I having a breakout again? Help

Hello everyone.

I've been diagonised with herpes 2 weeks ago. I started the treatment and after few days of a living hell I started feeling better. Last Friday I've been to the doctor for a follow up check and she said everything seems going well.

However since Saturday I've started feeling itchy again. Now I don't know if it can be still cinsidered a part of the healing process of the first episode (only two weeks are passed) or if I should be worried that this is a new breakout.

I don't want to become paranoid, but at the same way I am worried to underestimate this and to get another serious episode like the first one.

Also I have another problem, I hope you can help me with. My GP is in a different place of where I am actually living (different and very far cities), but my my actual home is provisory so I don't want to change it yet. The place where I am living is also in the countryside so it is very hard for me to get to the GP quickly and with public transport (where quickly means I could be unable to reach the closest GP for days). I was wondering if there is a way to go to another GP or to the hospital maybe? To ask them for some spare 'pills' so that if I start feeling sick I can get them in time.

I am quite new to this country so I am not sure about how it works.

Thanks to all.

    Hi AnnieAnne,

Sorry to hear about your ordeal.

It's not common for reactivations to occur so quickly, particularly if they've been properly treated, but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Did you finish the course of treatment for the first outbreak, and have you become ill or rundown since? A weakened immune system is usually a key factor in reactivations.

Without the appearance of sores, I don't think it's really possible to know if it is a reactivation at this stage, because itching is such a non-specific symptom.

Sorry, I realise that it's not much of a help, but the only way to know for certain whether or not you're having a reactivation is to see a doctor.

As for getting preventative treatment for future possible outbreaks, if you're in the UK, which I presume you are, your doctor may be able to issue an e-prescription if you explain that you're temporarily staying somewhere else/with a friend or relative (if this is the case), and aren't able to get to the surgery.

Alternatively, you may be able to see a GP more locally without changing your address if you attend an NHS walk-in centre. They can be found in most towns up and down the UK, so theoretically there should be one somewhere near you. You don't need to make an appointment and you may be required to wait for an hour or two, but this is probably preferable to travelling all the way back to your registered GP.

The other option is to order treatment privately online. This is quick and simple but usually more expensive. When you buy medicines from  a website, check its credentials to make sure it is registered with the GPhC and a safe place to buy from beforehand.

    Hope that helps

      It was very helpful, thanks.

I think I am also feeling better so I was probably worrying without no reason. It's just it is my first time and I am not an expert in recognising symtoms yet.

Really thanks for your answer, was really reassuring.

Find your nearest sexual health clinic as they do walk in times as well as appointments. Always have the mess ready at home to be prepared for an outbreak xxx
