Am I likely to have mononucleosis (mono/glandular fever)?

Hello,

I am an 17yo female and generally in good health, except for some stress and lack of sleep last week due to exams.

Since last wednesday I have been feeling unwell: it started out as aches everywhere especially in the neck/head/eyes as well as fatigue that meant I had to sleep most afternoons (I have not done this since I was a baby).

I first marked it as some perhaps "normal" consequences of lack of sleep and attended school the 2nd day, but it was a nightmare I had to come home by midday, stayed home on 3rd day and measured my temperature to be sure and it was 101! I have woken up twice in a sweat since then, and the elevated temperature comes and goes, ranging between 99,5-101,5 especially in afternoon/evening or early morning.

The worst is in the evenings after 6pm until I sleep, I can't do anything but lie down and try to ignore the pain...but in the daytime with some paracetamol I am not too bad if I'm not too active.

More recent symptoms include loss of appetite (can only bring myself to eat fruit/veg or very light foods) and a moderately sore throat., as well as slightly blocked ears.

Yesterday as it had been 6 days of off-and-on fever, I went to see my doctor who told me that my neck glands (only) were inflamed and I had a raised temperature (which i knew) and a sore-looking throat. He told me he thought it was a "harmless" viral infection, but to get a blood test if I wasn't feeling much better by today.

My father had mononucleosis when he was my age and mentioned it seemed similar to what I have now, I have done a little research and it seems possible. So I was wondering how likely it was to be this, and if not, what are similar causes to these symptoms?

    Hey Rachel,

Unfortunately it sounds like you do have it!

I had a terrible time with it but I made it worse through constant Google and building up stress trying to make it to be something it's not. It is completely s*** makes you feel tired/awful/ill/soar throat everything and anything. You can take the following advice if you want and I really recommend you do because had I been given this advice I would of recovered quicker and happier, the fact that you are already posting here makes me think you are googling and stressed to hell!

    1.Get off the websites

2.Buy some green tea and drink lots of water

3.Listen to some relaxing music wave music or rain music you know some of that therapeutic b******* (I'm calling it b******* but it honestly works)

4.Sleep as much as you physically can even push yourself to sleep more when you feel ok. You'll soon find the more you sleep the better you feel.

5.Forget about the blood test I got the blood test they got it wrong at first yadda yadda it eventually came back as mono by which time I'd already got myself hyped up about it.

Mono played havoc with me drove me up the wall for months because everyone's experience is different with it and I couldn't pinpoint straight away it was that, but guess what it's likely to be that and if not it's something not as bad!

    Keep going sister!

    Dan

    Hi Rachel,

wow im sorry to hear that you've been so Ill, I was 16 when I had gf and like you was in perfect health then it just hit sad it will get better though and I dare to say it does like you could have gf but I wouldn't worry about it too much until the doctor does a blood test if it comes back saying you don't then focus on getting better if it's saying you do have gf take sometime and rest it will get better but you have to rest and ask your doctor for something stronger if your throat really hurts, I remember the doctor gave me something I can't remember what but it took the pain away at least for a couple hours smile

Sounds like mono.. I just got over having mono last week and I had all those symptons except instead of fever I had constant naseau (I lost 8 pounds this past month despite not working out at all). If it is mono you REALLY need to make sure you rest. I had mono for a little over a month and I didn't take as much time as I needed to rest and I ended up having to make more doctors visits. Go to the doctors and they can run a blood test to find out or an ultrasound of your slpeen. If it is mono, the biggest thing is to rest, even if it's just the smallest bit.
