Ambiguous sore on leg getting worse

Hello all,

I am at my wit’s end with this situation.

What started out as a sizeable red rash on my husband’s leg has now evolved into an pus(?) filled open sore, ominously surrounded by a 2” red ring.

Stats:

Husband is 5’11, 260lbs, 29 years old.

No major medical history, no past surgeries.

No use of drugs, heavily drank in the past—recently cut off all drinking 3 weeks ago.

The sore is on his left leg accompanied by some swelling and a puffy ankle.

I will post pictures if I can.

We visited the ER in June and were prescribed Bactrim (2 days before at a Care clinic) and Ketflex. I believe the Bactrim was to be taken for a week and the Ketflex for 2.

My husband was also injected with a boosting shot of antibiotics to help jump start the healing.

This all worked and his wound was looking healthy and on the road to recovery.

When the antibiotics ran out, the healing stopped and the sore started to regress again over the course of July. We didn’t go back to the ER because we were waiting for our Health insurance to kick in.

Fast forward to August 11th, we visit the ER again.

They conducted a culture swab and took blood and cleaned the area with neosporin and bandaged it up. Again, he was prescribed Bactrim and Ketflex for 1 week this time. He was also prescribed an antibacterial soap: Hibiclens. He started the antibiotics that night. His bloodwork came back perfect. Red and white blood cell count was normal, the infection had not entered the blood stream.

We were instructed to come back on Wednesday to review the culture results.

On Wednesday, his sore looked worse than it did on Sunday. Very very red and oozy. It had never oozed before. We were instructed to keep the area moist with ointments and covered with bandages but I felt like that was part of the problem.

The culture came back clean with no growths and we were all puzzled. Because he’s on antibiotics right now, another culture cannot be conducted.

We had a visit with a PCP yesterday and they instructed us to stop using Bactrim and Ketflex and prescribed us Moxifloxacin and a steroid that he should take 5 times a day, then 4, then 3, 2 and then the last.

Does anyone have any insight?

No one has referred us to a wound care clinic or a specialist. This has been happening since May.
