Amiodarone

I am a ex pat living in Canada. I have had Afib and Aflutter for 10 years, I am on medication which is keeping the symptoms manageable. My question is for a good friend of mine who is on the same journey as me. His symptoms are more acute. His cardiologist has recommended he go on a course of Amiodarone [400mg per day] The side effects can be serious. Does anyone have any experience of this medication?

If the AF is reaching the point when daily life becomes difficult, I'd opt for a cardiac catheter ablation before you enter (or your friend) permanent AF. Assuming neither of you are in permanent AF? If you are an ablation is unlikely to be successful.
Amiodarone is a powerful drug and has only ever been given to me intravenously when I've ended up in A&E to stop a particularly bad episode. Have you tried Flecainide?

I was on Amiodarone for a short time after my oblation. my cardiologist took me off of it as soon as he could because of the horrible side effects.

I was on Amiodarone for quite a while but it does have some quite serious side-effects so after chatting to my consultant I went onto Dronedarone, a similar drug with less side-effects and dangerous outcomes.... Worth a mention to him so that he can chat to his Consultant... Hope that helps...

Hi I am also an expat but I live in NZ, I was given amiodarone I can't remember the dosage but when the pharmacist was making up the prescription she told me to doublecheck because I was also on warfarin and that there was a bad interaction taking both, rang the specialist and was told not to take the warfarin, when I actually took the amiodarone as prescribed, I woke up during the night with severe chest pain and a feeling of deep anxiety and that was after taking 1 pill the next morning I took 1 more pill and the anxiety got much worse and I didn't take another. Ended up at the doctor's shaking, crying and more. This is what they call one of the black pills I was told and I would advise anyone to stay away from it.It took weeks to get better and that was only after taking 2 pills. Moira.
