AMIS THR

Hello everyone, I joined this forum a couple of weeks ago, and so glad I did, so friendly, informative and supportive. I now have a date of 30 March, was listed end of October. The Surgeon who will be carrying out the op favours the AMIS approach, and i wondered if anyone has experience of this method, in terms of the benefits or disadvantages? Thank you.

I'm sorry Jude, it's not something I've heard of.  Mine will be a lateral approach.  I hope someone will with a more informative answer.

Good luck for 30th.   Keep posting cheesygrin

Hello thank you for your reply! Good luck with your op too. The incision is at the front (stomach area) for my op, hopefully, will gather more of an insight. Best wishes, Jude.

I hope that it will be to the side - by the outer edge (or close) of your front trousers pocket.

AMIS also known as Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery.

I think it is a very good approach as it inflicts minimal soft tissue damage, but it is not done by many surgeons. Most surgeons either use Posterior or lateral (as was mine).

Hi thank you for your reply Michael, it does seem to be the least common of all the procedures, but any feedback/experiences is valuable. I have not had the opportunity to see the surgeon as have been put on his list just recently to avoid many more weeks waiting for my original surgeon I saw in outpatients. Best wishes Jude

Hi Jude I am having the Amis surgery on this Friday in Australia. I can't wait!!

If you do an internet search for 'anterior hip replacement surgery reviews' you will find patient testimonials. Also 'anterior hip replacement surgery' will throw up videos and animations of the procedure and pre and post physio exercises.

I read the blog by Clarence Bass yesterday, he had it done years ago and gave updates over an 8 year period (I think it was)

Hi Jude, I had the Anterior method done and it was wonderful.  I was walking full on without aids by the fifth week and there are hardly any restrictions with this method.  I have a two inch scar, that is all.  My second THR done with the same method, came loose, but I think that had more to do with my thin pelvic bone and nothing to do with the actual surgery method.

Best wishes on the 30th and keep us informed.

      Hello Renee

Thank you for your message, and I'm sure it will be fine, I think it was that some people had never heard of it, and not spoken to anyone who has had this approach, but it must be his area of expertise. Countdown begins! Best Wishes, Jude

    Hi again Jude,

Having read up a little on AMIS now it seems like this is the future of hip replacements and you are lucky to have a surgeon skilled in this.

    Good for you x
