Amitriptyline and alcohol causing dizziness.

I've been on amitriptyline for since 2016 for my head tension pains i was getting when i suffered labrynthitis. I suffered for 6 months with labrynthitis i had to train my brain to walk again. I currently over the last few weeks have had a relapse and my doctor increased my amitriptyline to 75mg. I had one glass of wine last night and it made me really dizzy again. I go on holiday next weekend and may not be able to drink. Does anyone have any information on this? I used to be able to drink on amitriptyline.

    Hi Michelle

You really need to adjust to the higher dose which can take around 2 -4 weeks or so. If you were able to drink alcohol on a lower dose I would guess you will be able to again, although they do warn not to drink when on Amitriptyline. When I was on it I could barely tolerate one glass of wine but we are all very different in the way we metabolise drugs. I felt quite giddy on just one and decided it was not worth it for me, but you are going away and obviously want to be able to enjoy yourself. Play it by ear and if it makes your symptoms worse perhaps you will have to just drink say tonic water without the Gin - just tell yourself it is alcoholic and enjoy yourself. Hope you have a lovely time.
