Amitriptyline and movement disorder? can anyone help?

Hello there,

I was prescribed amitriptyline at only 10mg 15 years ago for TMJ pain and migraine prevention. It worked very well for both at first but over time did nothing I could see. Everytime Ive tried to stop it I havent been able to sleep for weeks, this drives me mad so I eventually start taking it again. My GP doesnt beleive me that only 10mg can have this effect.

Last year I managed to stop it for around 3 months but migraines got really bad and I started again on 10mg, quite soon after I started having jerking movements in my stomach like a tremor and also in my neck. Its very unpleasant and I cant control it. I have recently seen a neurologist who said I have a movement disorder that  is linked to my fibromyalgia but Ive got a feeling its the amitriptyline causing it as ive read it can cause movement disorders?

Does anyone have any experience of this and offer any advice or help I would be most grateful.

Thank you.

Many people have side effects..palpitations...dryness-mouth, etc.ive been on 25 mg at night for for Fibromyalgia pain and sleeplessness due to it..I've been on it 17 years now...I did get prescribed 50 mg in the first year, but I was like a zombie..went down to 10 then slowly increased it to 25 mg which I've been on for many years..works well for me...but coming off it or going to a lower dose..you do get withdrawals....my  had migraines 3-5 times a week sooo many years, in the end her specialist suggested she have BOTOX injections...worked sooo well, no migraines for over a year, she has to have one every 3 months..but it really does the trick well....might be worth chatting to your doctor about..have a lovely day...be blessed.,:-) xxx

I am on 50mg of amytriptaline for fibro and have been on it about two years now. I have to take this dose for it to do anything. I have suffered with terrible migraines for at least twenty years and the only drug that could vanquish them was sumitriptan.

I get quite a lot of the side effects from amytrip. which really get me down so recently I decided to try and very gradually lower the dose but I had a terrible rude awakening. I was so poorly that I thought was going to die. Such pain, everywhere. Even with the 50mg of amytrip. I have a lot of pain but its getting the right balance.

Im sorry I cant offer any better advice apart from giving Sumitriptan a go if you have not already done so that is.

I have been on amatripaline in the mid 1980's to 1990 I tried all the. Tripa lines I have had severe migraines since I was eight.  I was being treated for TMJ after a dentist opened my mouth to wide. None of them worked but they did bloat you up.  I was put on propranolol and methocarbamol .the. First one is a migraine prevention that works well without side effects. The second is great for TMJ.   The best thing I did was get a medical massage for my migraine.  Find a massage place see if you're ins will cover a few talk to your doc.  The first few may make them a bit worse but start out with three a month then you can go to two. It helps more then any pill out there.  I also take Maxalt for my migraine and dilodid and ondansitron for the nausea.  Hope this helps.
