Amitriptyline ... any comments on its effectiveness for our post op issues.

Amitriptyline often gets a mention on the board, any recommendations on its use for our first 12 months or so of rehab when in pain?

Thanks.

I don't know if I have been exceptionally lucky or not but, after a few weeks post op I didn't need any pain killers other than the occasional paracetamol. I am now 6 weeks post op and don't take anything.

Prior to having the op I was on co codamol, naproxen and gabapentin and still in terrible pain.

I misunderstood, I thought you were pre op.

Amitriptyline is prescribed for nerve pain I believe. I couldn't be given it because of other medication I have to take so was given gabapentin which worked really well.

Best to ask a medical professional though.

I'm 11 weeks post op. And 2 steps forward and 1 back.

The big issue is that the other hip needs replacing and is holding up progress. And pain levels are as a result of this and the other things many others get in terms of back leg knee issues etc.

      Sorry to hear that.

All I can say is that gabapentin (as an alternative to amitriptyline )was my saviour when I was waiting for the op.

    ric,

Amitriptyline is an old antidepressant. A few years ago they started using diazepam (valium) as a muscle relaxant, in recent years they have started giving out amitriptyline, probably as it is a safer alternative to valium.

I was offered gabapentin after my hip op although I found I did not need it and so did not take it. They gave me paracetamol through a drip after I dislocated my hip, three days after my hip op. Now I am home I am not taking anything for pain.
