Amitriptyline (Endep) causing very weird dreams

This is my first post here. I have been suffering severe chronic migraines for the past year and a bit and severe chronic headaches with occasional migraine for the past two and a half years. I’m 25 and I live in Australia. I haven’t had a headache free day since October 2015. I’ve seen four neurologists over the years and I found one in May last year that seems interested, even though there’s currently no cure, she is trying to help the best she can. It seems we have come to the end of the line with current treatments until new treatments start coming out. Botox injections failed and many other medications either didn’t work or had terrible side effects. Massage, acupuncture, etc hasn’t worked either.
My problem now is with my night time preventative, Endep. I’m up to a 50mg dose now. While it seems to be making a bit of difference with the severity of my migraines, I’ve started getting, on most nights, very weird dreams. If anyone else gets this, is there anything that can be done about it? It scares me to try to come off it and on to another one, because if a migraine were to hit while I wasn’t at home, I would probably need to call an ambulance. Has anyone been able to come off it and on to another preventative?
Thanks 😊

Hi, yes I had nightmares on this medication. I'm still on this medication, but I'm on the highest dose you can go. I've had severe migraines since I turned 24, now I'm 49. I am on several different medications and im still having a migraine everyday. I have been to all the top pain specialist in Chicago, and Cleveland, Michigan, California, I just haven't found the the right Neurologist for me. Now the Botox, that really worked for me, it has to be given to you a few times before your migraines start to get better and start to feel no pain. I had the treatment three times, unfortunately 3 times wasn't a charm for me, because on the third time I was actually able to do things like exercise a lot of things quite frankly I hadent did in probably 15 years, but my insurance quit paying for it and I am back to doctors and never ending pain. Your very young there are a lot of future treatments that are about to emerge I'm sure you will get something soon that will be a life changer.

Hey,
I've been taking 20mg of amitriptyline for just over a month for neuropathic pain. It's worked wonders for my pain but I'm having bizarre vivid dreams. 10 years ago I suffered with nightmares and my partner introduced me to the concept of lucid dreaming. Basically it's a mental technique where you consciously recognise you are dreaming and change the 'plot' of your dream to something more enjoyable. It's a complex process learning to dream lucidly and different techniques work for different people but if you really believe you can take control of your dreams, you can. I've actually been quite enjoying my strange dreams recently, it's a bit like going to sleep and watching a really good movie! Maybe you could see if there is a lucid dreaming technique that suits you?
