Amitriptyline Fluid Retention & Dehydration

Just briefly, I've been on Amitriptyline since 1994 and I'm currently in
the middle of a VERY slow process of reducing with the aim of finally
getting rid of Amitriptyline for good (I attempted coming off about 7yrs
ago and it was a disaster - I'm better informed this time so feeling confident).
Anyway, my current question is, has anyone else found that they are carrying
extra fluid while being dehydrated at the same time? I have seen a couple of
different naturopaths in the last few years and they have all said that I am
carrying 5-6kilos of extra fluid but my cells are dehydrated at the same time.
I'm starting to wonder if this is another amitriptyline side-effect and will
hopefully rectify itself once I'm completely off the tabs.

Hi sheena737. Please let me know how you get on with coming off your amitriptyline. I have been on them for almost 3 years & am considering coming off them too.
Good luck!!

Hi Stephen and Amanda, I will definitely keep in touch as l go. I am doing
it very slowly though so as not to shock the poor old body too much.
I was on 50mg from 1994 until 2009. I came off reasonably slowly that
time but after a few weeks I ended up on so many other meds that I ended
up going back to the devil I knew. If someone had told me at the time that it
was all just withdrawal symptoms l would've tried to see ut through.
Anyway, I went back up to 50mg (& even 75mg briefly). Then decided that I
wanted take as little as possible. So, I worked my way down to 25mg and
stayed there for 2 years. Ready to take the next step about 3 months ago I
went down to 22.5mg for 6 weeks and now I've been on 20mg for 5 weeks.
I'm using a pill cutter to cut the 10s into 1/4s. So far so good with the main
thing I'm noticing is that it's taking me longer to get to sleep but I'm still sleeping
well enough. The main problem last time was hardly sleeping at all when I
came off.
This time I know what to expect so I'm all ready with the acupuncture,
homeopaths, VitB, melatonin, etc. It is going to be a slow process as I'm
going to go down by 2.5mg every 6 weeks. I figure after all these years
what's another few months😊
Anyway please stay in touch you two. I'd like to hear how you get on.
The main thing I'm going to keep in mind is that no matter what the
withdrawal symptoms are like, life will be much better and HEALTHIER
without it in the long run.
Good luck 😊
