i was put on amitriptyline 10mg to help with pain and sleep. side effects of rapid heartbeat and daylong fatigue so doc says get off. i took 5 mg for 2 days, then 10 mg for 9 days, then back to 5mg for 2 days. is it okay to simply stop or should i try to taper a bit more?

Definitely taper.
As you were on 10 mg for 9 days, I suggest you ask your doctor what taperring schedule he/she advises.
Or you could just taper on your own from 5 mg to 1 mg over say a month.
