    Hi Terence,

Like you l was on Amlodopine, only stuck it for 8 years, mad fool l was. It did bring my blood pressure down, along with Canderstartin but at what cost. To be honest l really didn't feel any noticeable side effects until this year when l had to go on a betta blocker for rapid heartbeat. That's when l became really ill, everything thrown at me it seemed, worst l think was the breathlessness and feeling of sheer panic and itchy skin. Just today I've been back to Dr as couldn't stand this feeling of complete illness all the time. Saw another Dr ( it's becoming impossible to see your own GP these days) and took my list of side effects with me. She agreed l could come off the Amlodopine and just up the dosage of Canderstartin. Start this tomorrow, see how l go. My pressure was up when l went today, 142/80 and have to go back in a fortnight. Hope this works and I've got my life back. Fingers crossed. Was interesting hearing how you went on with your Amlodopine. You did the right thing getting off as soon as you could. I do hope you crack it this time. Good luck.

I know we're all different but I had no symptoms at all with Bendroflumethiazide, I wish I could have it back! but the diabetes nurse took me off it 2 years ago, because my BP had reduced well (still on Losartan 100mg). It's now gone up but the GP who gave me Amlodipine says it's not suitable for people over 55; the GP who took me off it yesterday is still not keen, so I'm making do with the Losartan at the moment.

Good luck with the Bendroflume ~ I'm jealous!! :D

    Hi,

I was put on 5 mg of amlodipine in addition to 100 mg losartan and 2.5 mg bendroflumethiazide by my GP about five years ago to get the bp down further which it did. I felt fine initially and didn't get any of the side effects reported by others on this site but I did seem to get feelings of insecurity and depression especially when I started work again after unemployment which unsettled me a bit.  However, the worst part was that, shortly after taking the drug, my dentist noticed what he said were traces of gum disease and after a couple of years another dentist (more experienced) connected the worsening condition to the amlodipine.  I asked another doctor who said that I shouldn't have to put up with that sort of thing but couldn't increase the losartan as I am on maximum dose so just see how it goes.  I started researching this drug on websites and what a revelation.   I discovered that there has never been any real clinical tests into long term use of this drug and any unofficial ones that have been carried out report side effects far in excess of, and in much higher percentages, than those claimed by the maker.  This drug does creep up on you over long time use and anybody taking it should think twice.  I think that there is an obsession with blood pressure and that a lot of GPs have become nothing more than pill pushing quacks who see patients as an encumbrance and just want the easy way out.  I have lost confidence in doctors even though I have two in the family.
