Hello, Can anyone tell me you has had side effects from Amlodipine, especially rhinitis, sinus or nose congestion dry mouth etc tell what alternative drug were you prescribed.  I believe I am limited in what groups of medication I can take because I have asthma before being diagnosed with high BP.  Thank you.

Hi David Thank you for your reply I have read your previous post.  I see you take Atenol which I think is a beta blocker if so then I can't take it because of the asthma.  I have been on Amlodipine for over 7 years.

A few weeks after starting it I developed a dry mouth followed by sinus and throat problems.  It lasted weeks and was put down to a virus by my gp.  I even had to cancel 60th birthday celebrations because I was ill.  It did leave me however with some nasal congestion/post nasal drip

which was mild. I did not even consider the bp tablets at the time.

Over the years I have had various conditions and problems and started to look into the drugs I am taking for side effects and interactions.  I found out that rhinitis is a rare side effect of amlodipine.  I have friends on it and they only suffer from ankle swelling as do I.  My gp did not seem to think it caused rhinitis and as I had a lot to contend with I just let it go. To bring you up to date I have now got according to gp silent reflux and I think that the nasal problems may be part of the problem

and from reading other patients experiences of this drug (i have 4 with similar problems to me who have come off this drug) I think this drug is the cause.  I have explained to my GP and she has said she might change it hence the question on what do others take in it's place. I go

tomorrow and I hope I can get it sorted.  Thanks once again

I am on 50mg Atenolol, 2.5mg Bendroflumethiazide which I take after breakfast, and 5mg Doxazosin (but I only take 4mg) and 100mg Losartan Potassium which I take after my evening meal. I also take a low dose Aspirin before bed.

I was prescribed 20mg Simvastatin which made me very weak. I stopped those so have been put on 600mg Gemfibrozil, to be taken half an hour before breakfast and evening meal. They have the same effect so I don't take those either.

I have an appt with cardiologist at the local hospital next month so I'll find out what he thinks.

    I am 75 yrs old.

I take 5mg of this HBP drug, along with 25mg Atenolol.....fluid retension was my experience with Amlodipine, but I upped the grape seed Extract I've been taking for 19 yrs and got rid of the fluid.....I still take the above 2 drugs....and I know all drugs can cause dry mouth and for sure with aging.

Grape Seed Ex would HELP your asthma....a friend takes grape seed ex now over 6 yrs and it reduces her asthma issues....

If you don't take a pharma blood thinner, no reason why you can't take grape seed ex, it's a powerful antioxidant....

Do some research on grape seed ex for yourself...I could write my own book on my experience with this grape "seed" and own a few books on it too. I'm 76 and in the U.S. (so calif)

libralady, as someone who has had multiple side effects from 5/6 different BP meds over the last 18 months (Amlodipine was the first - it caused leg/ankle swelling and eventually led to varicose eczema), I can recommend Losartan Potassium as being the only one so far that is causing no discernible side effects.  However, the downside for me is that it is not controlling my blood pressure down to normal levels on its own.

Because of my extreme sensitivity to the previous drugs, at the moment I am being left on just the Losartan.  GP referral to a gym is underway to see if that will help.  Meanwhile I am trying to lose some weight - although I'm just within normal weight limits for my height and have an excellent diet, I'm wondering if a few pounds off might help. Clutching at straws but have just a sole kidney which itself is low functioning and I will do everything I can to try and stop this high BP from attacking my kidney further - exactly what the latest BP pill has done!

So perhaps you could try Losartan Potassium - my pharmacist says it is the BP pill about which he hears the least complaints of side effects from his customers.

Hello MrsO  Thank you for replying I do appreciate it.  I am going to my gp this afternoon and I will tell her about Losartan.  There are some that I cannot take because I have Asthma, not sure if this is one of them or not.

I have been on Amlodipine for over 7 years and yes it does cause some ankle swelling.  I have developed a condition called silent reflux and because I think that this drug maybe partly to blame as soon after starting it I developed sinus and postnasal drip which was bad at first but then settled and became mild.  The silent reflux causes excess throat mucous and can affect the sinuses and nose so I thought changing the bp tablets might at least help.
