Amlodipine And Stomach Pain

Posted , 2 users are following.

I'm new to this site so please excuse me if I am posting incorrectly or not following the right thread etc. Firstly I want to thank the people good enough to post about their negative experiences on the BP medication amlodipine. Without this I would still be suffering and struggling for answers and most concerning looking at significant medical procedures to try and explain my constant stomach pain and heavily reduced variety of diet if I wished to avoid additional stomach misery. Like the others initially I didn't pick the link between amlodipine and stomach pain. After every test known to man showed effectively nothing to explain my discomfort I was at a loose end, miserable and desperate for answers. By chance my mother suffered memory loss from the prescription of new BP meds which got me thinking. I had been on amlodipine for some time so I initially discounted it as a factor but remembered being upped from 5 to 10 at roughly the time my problems started to be debilitating. I checked with doctor google and found this forum which has been a godsend. The thing I wish to express is the time frame involved, after stopping taking this poison (for want of a better term) nothing happened for the first two days, on day three I actually felt lousy in the stomach again and got all depressed that it wasn't the amlodipine after all. Right throughout this process I was monitoring my BP at home (Omron machine works awesome!) and my blood pressure actually came down from 150/85 to 145/80 so I thought stuff it, why continue taking the meds even if they aren't responsible for my pain. After a week I feel fantastic and am getting better by the day, there is still some vague discomfort but based on what others have said it will take a month to completely recover. The only thing I have really added is a decent probiotic tablet daily to try and heal my stomach. I am even getting away with eating things previously not worth the grief. I told my doctor (doctor number 3 in the process at this stage) and he wasn't surprised saying that there was potentially stomach cancer concerns and heart problems arising in long term users, though don't quote him on that... I hope my little story helps others, how others on this forum have helped me. Good luck!

    Hi Shannon,

You are definitely on the right site for advice on Amlodopine. What a horrible drug it is, although am sure some have found it beneficial to them. I came off it on the 1st September and sad to say am still nowhere right yet. I have depression and anxiety still and surges of high blood pressure. Before l started on 10mg of Amlodopine l was never depressed. Also my breathing is affected, my lungs feel underinflated.

But still l don't feel well or anywhere like the happy person l once was. Like you l kept wondering what was wrong with me and what the hell was causing it all.

Am so glad for you that you are on the mend stomache-wise and for different people l think it takes various recovery times. It also depends on how long you have been on it. Myself it was 9 years so keep telling myself it's going to take some time to get it all out of my system, heart, kidneys etc. It messed with my brain that's for sure, leaving me a nervous jittery wreck. I can believe it when you say it can cause stomach cancer and heart issues.

Wishing you good health for the future.

      Hi Christine,

?Thanks for the encouragement! I am still improving and its been nearly a month off the amlodipine, it was almost like every time I said I was going good for a while my stomach reminded me its not over yet... I cant wait until the day when I think OMG I haven't had any symptoms whatsoever for ages now. To be fair though I suffer very little discomfort at present, almost there. I find it interesting you linking this poison with depression and anxiety. I have suffered severe depression since my early thirties and it is only since I read your post that I realised I haven't had any of the shopping centre meltdowns I used to have since quitting the amlodipine, even though I suffered anxiety and depression prior to taking it. That is a bonus. Anyhow I hope you recover too in time, for what its worth a decent clinical psych worked wonders for my depression and anxiety and handfuls of pristiq and mirtazapine ha ha! Good luck!

    Hi Shannon,

Really pleased you are improving so well now you're off the dreaded Amlodopine. Here's hoping this situation continues.

Regarding myself, well l would like to say am improving too but it's a slow process so far. Still got headaches, and worse, my nose still blocked which scares me most. Think this particular problem just takes me right back to the allergic reaction l had late last year where my nose and throat closed up! So of course when this is going on l feel total panic, which am sure doesn't help my recovery. But l tend to live day by day and live in hope that everything will eventually pan out. Fingers crossed. Good health to you and long may it continue.
