Amlodipine Beslayte

Hi!  I’m a 44 year old woman who has high blood pressure and cholesterol.  I started taking medication at age 36 due to high BP and the fact that I have a strong family history for these issues. I started taking  Benicar at age 34 with success. A few years later, Bystolic was added for my heart rate and pounding heart which was probably more stress/work related than heart. I was able to go off of the Bystolic a year later. I had much success on these medications. I changed doctors and she  switchedme to Losartan Potassium.  I really can’t remember why she switched meds but the Losartan has worked well for me. About three weeks ago, my blood pressure went up due to family stress relating to an up coming move. We monitored BP for a few weeks and it didn’t go down. Doctor started me on Amlodipine Beslayte.  I started to have swelling in my left leg, shin area a few days later. Over the weekend, I started having flushing of my ears face, and as of last night, my left knee. It seems to happen in the early evening. I contacted my doctor and even after all the side effects, she wants me to continue to take this medication.  I’ve read other people’s reviews and side effect of Amlodipine and I think I should discontinue. Any thoughts on this matter?  I didn’t take the Amlodipine today because the flushing was so bad last night.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

    Hi there,

I am sorry that you are feeling this way on this med. It is a horrible pill/med and it is bothering me as well. I stopped taking it and 22 hours later it gave me such horrible and scary withdrawls. I was on 5 mg for 5 days and then stopped and it was very scary. I got back on 2.5mg and will try to ween off it.

This med is strong and i guess we need to slowly get off it, that's what I am going to do.

I will go to my GP tomorrow and demand a new bp med. A lot of folks here mention Losartan Potassium, so that will be my next bp med to try.

Doctors should always listen to their patients. You have the right to tell them how you feel. I hope your situation get better.

Thank you for the suggestions on weening off of Amlodipine.  Ive read about the terrible side effects this evening and am convinced this is NOT the proper medication for me. I will probably ween myself off. I just started the medication Monday, 4/16 @ 5mg.  My husband thinks i dont need to ween off after being on it for only 1 week.

I agree that doctors should always listen to their patients. I’m actually surprised my doctor has responded in this manner. At this point, I may be going to a Convenient Care or ER for side effects from Amlodepine or side effects from high blood pressure. I’ll go down to 2.5 mg and see what happens. I can deal with the high BP, but cant deal with the swelling and flushing.

I normally swim 2-3 times a week, but with these side effects I havent been doing so.  Throughout my childhood, teen yrs, and adult life, Ive participated in sports and exercise. Honestly, when i was 21, i was bicycling 15 miles everyday and my total cholesterol was 200!  I took pride in staying fit and I will continue to do so as long as possible!  Thanks again!

I have been on 5 mg for close to 5 days and tried to just stop taking these pills. I was having the scariest palpatations and my ears were ringing very loud. I was very scared, so I decided to be safe and took 2.5mg at 2 am. I just took another 2.5mg 20 minutes ago. I will see my GP tomorrow and get on a new med. If you read my thread that i started. I am very fit and eat very healthy. My only issue is anxiety and stress. I am also not a good candidate for BP pills.

I will do all i can to get off them. I will see my GP tomrrow and see how i can safely get off the amlodipine and get started on stress reduction. These pills are horrible..

I wish you lots of luck!

Yes, I read your thread. I too, struggle with anxiety and stress issues.  I am a “type A” personality/ very driven person.  I have been working on becoming less tyke A all my adult life. I still want to be driven, but in a healthy manner.

Let me know how your doctor appointment goes tomorrow!  Continue to feel better!

Hi Kand - Like I told Mr42206 you can just stop taking Amlodipine, but if it makes you feel better to wean that’s great also.  As I stated before, I was on Amlodipine for 5 yrs @ 5ml, then my dosage got increased to 10 ml & I couldn’t even wear shoes my feet were so swollen!  I personally think this is a toxic RX  & I could go on & on about that, but I won’t bore you with the details.  If you are having issues with it at the beginning stages, then please get off of it & save your health!  Have either of you tried beet root tablets, magnesium or grape seed capsules? ...also, hibiscus tea is also beneficial in helping to lower B/P.  Obviously diet, exercise & stress reduction are key - Magnesium & B vitamins help relieve stress & b/p - good luck!

      debra16694,

Thank you for the reply. I decided to completely stop the Amlodipine. I just woke up and feel a little better today!  I haven’t taken the Amlodipine since Sunday morning. The swelling is down and just feel better all around. Not a 100%, but I feel less swollen in general. I think I must have been retaining water all over my body!

I take Magnesium Theocrate: one in the morning and two before bed. I’ve taken b vitamins ds well, but stopped while on Amlodipine.  Not sure why, but I just wasn’t myself  on the Amlodipine.  I also take L-Theanine as needed, but will probably need to take it everyday for awhile. I had 200 mg of l-theanine around 8 last night and another 200 right before bedtime at 10. I’ll look into the beet root and grape seed extract as well. I actually feel like swimming this morning. The Amlodipine must be leaving my system, thank God.

Thanks for your response and suggestions.

I too believe this is a very toxic medication!  I am very clear on this fact because I feel SO much better already. It’s been 48 hours since I took an Amlodipine.  That substance will never be in contact with my system again!

    >Bystolic was added for my heart rate and pounding heart

Amlodipine can cause heart arrhythmias, I believe it was doing this on me.

Interesting that you took Losartan Potassium, the potassium balance is my current interest in my own case.  Are you not also taking a diuretic?

I don't like Amlodipine and I don't like the whole idea of calcium channel blockers.  I've done much better without them.  What's your Amlodipine dosage?  I think you're fine to skip it, but it does take a couple of days to clear from your system.  You can pick it up again tomorrow if your BP seems too high.

Thanks for your reply. I was on 5 mg Amlodipine.  If you read my response to Debra above, I am feeling better!  I’ve never taken a diuretic.  I normally don’t swell, but Amlodipine really puffed me up!  I haven’t had one since Sunday a.m. and I can already feel a positive difference this morning.  Have a great day and thanks again!

Change your diet and your bp will naturally go down. All this poison we're introducing to our bodies is garbage and foreign.

      Michael,

I agree with you!  Thanks for your response. I’m feeling better now that Amlodipine is leaving my system!  I actually feeling like doing my miles swim today. Thanks!  Have a great day!
