Amlodipine for 2 weeks now

Hi Everyone

Been on Amlodipine for about 10 days now and oh my what a difference. I feel tired and have tightness in my chest something that I not experienced on Bisoprolol alone, in fact I feel worse on these meds than what I was diagnosed with which was Angina

I consider myself to be a fit 59 year old who has always participated in sporting activities and maintained a good level of fitness and now I feel as if I am on the decline. I do realise that these drugs are there to protect me but I am losing my zip!!

I would welcome any comments as my anxiety levels are starting to rise again as I wait to hear about my CABG.

Thanks all

Cube

This is exactly what happened to me and many other people on this site. You do not have to suffer. Go back to the doctors and ask for a change of medication. Report your findings (and I urge everyone to do this as many doctors are unaware of the side effects this nasty drug can have) on Yellow Card on-line. I  do hope you find a medication which suits you better.

      Hi Meles

Thanks for your reply, definitely need to get off this stuff.

See your doctor right away to have your heart checked.  The tightness in your chest may just be your anxiety, but it could also be the medication.  Many reports

of palpitations caused by amlodipine and some leading to aFib as happened to me.

      Thanks cpwood.

These drugs are a nightmare, I will give my surgery a call to see if I can speak to my GP. I don't want to sound like a wally but I have noticed a definite change.

    Hi Cube,

The anxiety, chest tightness and many other symptoms happened to me as well.  I thought i was having a heart attack.  My cardiologist performed a heart cath but my heart was fine.  I finally realized it was the drug causing digestive issues which caused the symptoms. Ive been off Amlodipine for approximately 10 months and the symptoms have subsided.  Hope you feel better soon.

Have your had CABG or think you may need it?  At 59 you are way too young to be feeling so rough.  Main thing DO NOT GIVE UP.  Make sure you are getting proper nutrients and/or supplements.  I take it your BP is elevated.  Hence the reason for amlod.  There are so many people who do not tolerate the drug very well that there are some really serious questions in lots of minds about it.  In a previous thread I commented that the second (and last) time I was on amlod I began to feel so bad "I thought I was going to die".  Lo and behold, within days of the feeling I found those very words in someone else's comments.

Since my caridiologist takes amlod and swears by it, he doesn't want to hear my complaints against it and probably thinks I am unduly prejudiced against it.  I physically cannot tolerate the stuff.  I have been suffering from something else that I noted someone else has - tinnitus.

I surely do not want to steer anyone in the wrong direction but I have been checking into theories and practices of some heart doctors who believe the right food and supplements can put you back on the right track.  So far I feel a lot better and all my test results are a lot better.

    Good luck, Cube.

      Hi Brenda,

Appointment made with GP for this afternoon to discuss.

      Thanks again

    Thanks Brenda

I have made an appointment to see my GP today to discuss. I am generally a fit guy and even exercising daily at a reasonable level 25k on a Wattbike as an example. I just feel that my fitness levels are going to suffer pre-op and that surely can't be a good thing. Oh! I did have a Flu jab last week don't know if that could have an impact.

    Thanks Cube

Yes, that flu jab most definitely can impact some patients.  That is usually wait a few days or so and let any effects subside.  Glad to hear you are getting exercise.  From what I have experienced and observed if you go into surgery you will do better if your body is as fit as possible.  Is there a chance you can get by without the surgery?  In any case, please let us know the outcome of today's doc visit.

      Hi Brenda

Went to see a GP and ended up in A&E Bloods and ECG done all entirely normal. I know the Doc was being very cautious and had my wellbeing at the forefront of his thoughts and I appreciate that. I just felt he didn't really listen to what I was saying. I was told not to drive and get my wife to take me to the hospital, he rang ahead told them to expect me. I explained that I was feeling anxious and feeling floored but he focused on the chest discomfort and concluded I was having pain at rest. I explained that I went to the gym most days and worked out with no pain whatsoever during cardio sessions, in fact I come straight from a a good 5k row and weights session to see him.

At A&E the Doctor was a breath of fresh air, a young vibrant lad who talked me through my normal blood and ECG results and my anxiety levels, he talked about me over doing it on the exercise front, advising me to ease off until my specialist appointment next month.

On the plus side I must praise the NHS for the care I have recieved over these last 4-6 weeks, brilliant!!

All in all a funny old day, which still didn't deliver any real answers to my Amlodipine question.

      Thanks for reading

      Cube
