An actual Chatroom installed? Who would like to see this happen??

Hi ~
It's unfortunate that because this is a fourm with discussions, the replies can take up to a day or so for a response. I wish there were a way for anyone to want an immediate response, a chatroom be installed so that can happen. Making rooms for particular issues IE: alone at Christmas, depression etc...anyone seem to agree or not?

I can see that it would be of huge benefit where someone was feeling low, whether by taxt or voice.

However, example, me writing this, you'd be in the chatroom and respond immediately. It would be like we are in the room together with all the friends we've made. I'd love that!
Thanks for you wonderful response, Doc!!!
much love

Would these be open chats, or private? Perhaps either, just as at present. As one or two go "off piste" in an open chat they could move to a private chat to follow their ideas there; Or start a new open chat.
It all seems very exciting and dynamic. Just imagine the effect it would have on your "Purgatory" discussion.
An excited Doc

It would be a good idea, but I cannot see it happening - I did mention in a previous post. The problem you would first encounter is the need of monitoring 24/7, would be fine in a single timezone, multiple moderators would need to be addressed first.
Then there's the technical aspect - the server is held in Dublin, Ireland, so you would need a system administrator to make sure everything runs smoothly. Chatrooms are also resource hungry, but this would depend on the cost of keeping something like this online, perhaps a trial would suffice, who knows.
From my experience with chatrooms, they do attract idiots, and a site like this would not want that type of person - pestering people or having a private chat with someone.
If all the con's could be addressed, it would be a good idea - I can't even remember where I mentioned it previously. It would be a case of thw pro's against
cons, to find out what would be best and having staff.
Well, that's my view anyway.

Les.

I think it could happen. There are many "oracle" people on here that have an invested interest in this site. And, with the different timezones, it would make perfect sense. Like for instance, the UK could monitor their daytime and the US could monitor their daytime therefore nights would be covered and daytime as well. It's not a difficult task.
As far as the "idiots" there has to be rules and they have to be monitored yes, but to enter a chat the requirements could be that they post 5, 9 or 10 discussions on subjects that pertain to this site. After reaching that requirement, they can then access the chatroom.
However, if they are being "idiots" they can be given warnings then banned. It's that simple! The chat could be set up with various rooms as I mentioned and one for "free talking". It can and should work as this stifles one to communicate with immediate responses. Some people are in a crisis mode and would like that immediate "talk" so they can work through their problems.
Anyway, just a thought.

I used to use various chatroom scripts, they cost about $50, but then you need hosting/domain name, etc. Now, there's loads of webhosting companies on the internet that state unlimited this and that, really is just advertising hype....no such thing exists whatsoever!!!
Chatroom scripts are easy to setup, however one thing that people forget to consider is bandwidth - this can grow very high in a short period, But this depends on how many peo are in the chatroom.
A hosting provider can easily shutdown a chatroom if they are using too much server resources.

Les.

I suggest that the wayto go on this is for those who want it to join one of the many existing ones (obviously all join the same one)

This will not happen and is not the idea of these forums. It is too expensive to set up and fraught with all sorts of issues. The closest you can get to this here is by using the PM service if you know someone else is around but this is one to one. There are plenty of existing programmes that could be used for this if users wanted to contact each other this way. It would just involve you all joining the same one and accepting each other as contacts. If you Google instant messaging there is a lot of information and there is this from Wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_instant_messaging_clients
I haven't got a lot of experience of these but believe you can have multiple users in the same chat at once.
We did used to have "closed" or "members only" groups in the forums in the past but they did not work very well so we stopped doing this.

Alan

Yes, Google Talk does support 'Group Chat' - from what I have seen you need to have a Google account and be in the circle of friends.
Don't quote me on this I have only used it once, I think it supports text, voice and video but I think this is called something else possibly Hangouts....
LOL

Les.
