An actual Chatroom installed? Who would like to see this happen??

Hi ~

It's unfortunate that because this is a fourm with discussions, the replies can take up to a day or so for a response.  I wish there were a way for anyone to want an immediate response, a chatroom be installed so that can happen.  Making rooms for particular issues IE: alone at Christmas, depression etc...anyone seem to agree or not?

That's a great idea. Do you mean that it would be by text or voice? I can see that integration within the forum community ould make it more serviceable than a general chatroom.

I can see that it would be of huge benefit where someone was feeling low, whether by taxt or voice.

More like an instant response.  Voice could be confusing with all the different accents and not everyone has or uses text.  Yes, I did say that, not everyone uses text!  haha!

However, example, me writing this, you'd be in the chatroom and respond immediately.  It would be like we are in the room together with all the friends we've made.  I'd love that!

Thanks for you wonderful response, Doc!!!

      much love

O Frustrated, you would love it. I would love it. It would be so nearly spontaneous. There are some things that run best in a to and fro exchange. Others, one needs to stand back and ponder.

Would these be open chats, or private? Perhaps either, just as at present. As one or two go "off piste" in an open chat they could move to a private chat to follow their ideas there; Or start a new open chat.

It all seems very exciting and dynamic. Just imagine the effect it would have on your "Purgatory" discussion.

My thoughts on whether it be open or private, I'd love to see rooms.  Some for the depression group, some for open chat, some for cancer etc...it would cover a variety of discussions.  Possibility of a guest on a particular day discussing an issue that is at hand.  Whatever it be, it would be a great asset to this site as this site is held down with openess.  It's a great site, don't get me wrong but with that addition, it would be awesome. To be allowed to enter the chat, one  must post whatever amount of new discussions the MOD requires.  So, it's available to those who want and like to post discussions (ie: me lol) or if one doesn't want to post but just drop by and read the fourms, that's fine too.  But it's not a given to enter the chats just because you signed up.  There has to be rules and guidelines for it to work for everyone and everyones' safety.

Anyway, thank you for your post!

    Hi Frustrated,

It would be a good idea, but I cannot see it happening - I did mention in a previous post. The problem you would first encounter is the need of monitoring 24/7, would be fine in a single timezone, multiple moderators would need to be addressed first.

Then there's the technical aspect - the server is held in Dublin, Ireland, so you would need a system administrator to make sure everything runs smoothly. Chatrooms are also resource hungry, but this would depend on the cost of keeping something like this online, perhaps a trial would suffice, who knows.

From my experience with chatrooms, they do attract idiots, and a site like this would not want that type of person - pestering people or having a private chat with someone.

If all the con's could be addressed, it would be a good idea - I can't even remember where I mentioned it previously. It would be a case of thw pro's against

cons, to find out what would be best and having staff.

Well, that's my view anyway. cheesygrin

    Les.

      Hi Les!

I think it could happen.  There are many "oracle" people on here that have an invested interest in this site.  And, with the different timezones, it would make perfect sense.  Like for instance, the UK could monitor their daytime and the US could monitor their daytime therefore nights would be covered and daytime as well.  It's not a difficult task.

As far as the "idiots" there has to be rules and they have to be monitored yes, but to enter a chat the requirements could be that they post 5, 9 or 10 discussions on subjects that pertain to this site.  After reaching that requirement, they can then access the chatroom.

However, if they are being "idiots" they can be given warnings then banned.  It's that simple!  The chat could be set up with various rooms as I mentioned and one for "free talking".  It can and should work as this stifles one to communicate with immediate responses.  Some people are in a crisis mode and would like that immediate "talk" so they can work through their problems.

      Anyway, just a thought.

      Hi Frustrated,

I used to use various chatroom scripts, they cost about $50, but then you need hosting/domain name, etc. Now, there's loads of webhosting companies on the internet that state unlimited this and that, really is just advertising hype....no such thing exists whatsoever!!!

Chatroom scripts are easy to setup, however one thing that people forget to consider is bandwidth - this can grow very high in a short period, But this depends on how many peo are in the chatroom.

A hosting provider can easily shutdown a chatroom if they are using too much server resources.

      Regards,

      Les.

I can't say I'm in favour of it becoming an unmoderated chat room, and if you want instant response then that is what it will be. There is a modorator in place for a reason.

I suggest that the wayto go on this is for those who want it to join one of the many existing ones (obviously all join the same one)

I agree with you Steve.  But as I mentioned, they must be monitored or they won't work.  I know of none that one can join in anymore.  Share?

what such a wonderful thought frustrated not just to get instant replies but to have us all in the same room, I remember in my early days of computers there was a game I played we all (like this site) took on different personas and we all mingled in different rooms in the guise we took (I took a Lion) we did chat in real time some of us were down some of us helped other people over a dark part of their life but that seems so long ago now when I was able to stay at my terminal until the early hours of the morning get 3-4 hours sleep then do a full days work.  Of course this site was taken down in less than a year the reason being some users were open to abuse to often.

    Hi all,

This will not happen and is not the idea of these forums. It is too expensive to set up and fraught with all sorts of issues. The closest you can get to this here is by using the PM service if you know someone else is around but this is one to one. There are plenty of existing programmes that could be used for this if users wanted to contact each other this way. It would just involve you all joining the same one and accepting each other as contacts. If you Google instant messaging there is a lot of information and there is this from Wiki

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_instant_messaging_clients

I haven't got a lot of experience of these but believe you can have multiple users in the same chat at once.

We did used to have "closed" or "members only" groups in the forums in the past but they did not work very well so we stopped doing this.

    Regards,

    Alan

      Hi Enis,

Yes, Google Talk does support 'Group Chat' - from what I have seen you need to have a Google account and be in the circle of friends.

Don't quote me on this I have only used it once, I think it supports text, voice and video but I think this is called something else possibly Hangouts.... rolleyes

      LOL

      Regards,

      Les.

Well, there ya go, it's squashed and with reasons of the sites choice and that's their prerogative.  It was worth a try.  If anyone is comtemplating a chat site that they find is good, perhaps you could share with those who are interested...but share this in our PM's, please.  Thank you for all your responses.
