Hi Neffie,
I have polycystic kidney disease (diagnosed at 19, now 45). Im in stage 4 and found out a few months ago that I was severely anaemic. I have since had 4 blood transfusions and 2 iron infusion. Unfortunately these don't seem to be holding and I'm still anaemic. My consultant has told me about ethropoitin or EPO for short. Its a hormone that the kidney fails to produce. He explained I would need a top up in hospital and then could self administer with subcutaneous injections at home myself every 2 weeks. I hope I'm not misleading you but I was told that with polycystic kidney disease, it was quite common. What form of CKD do you have? I hope to have an appointment next week so I'll let you know how I get.on. I am currently taking ferrous sulphate too. Kate

To be honest I wasn;t really aware of them. I was tired and foud day to day living exhausting but I was working shifts with early starts and late nights. It was GPs idea to text for anaemia. When she got the resullt, I had a Consultant appointment the next day and she told me to take an overnight bag just to be safe. Does yor sister see her renal consultant regularly. Perhaps she could have an appointment bought forward if you explain the circumstances. Bornemouth Hospital did for me. I hope you get the info you need. I am generally tired but nothing too terrible. At the moment I take ferrous sulphate as a supplement. Good luck

I'm at stage 3 & I am mildly anemic. I don't take any iron supplement but I do see an oncologist/hemotologist & last year I did have a round of iron infusions. Very expensive in the US.
