anesthesia triggering a manic phase?

I recently had some plastic surgery and have been experiencing some mania.  I have stayed on my meds and never missed a dose.  I've not had an episode in almost 9 years so I am wondering if this might be the cause.  I have googled the hell out of this topic but have not gotten anything definitive.  I see my doc on Wednesday but would like to know if anyone else has had this happen to them.

    Hi Harmony,

    It is my understanding that pretty much any serious stress can trigger mania. (I'm not sure about depression) You can probably find some info on stress/triggers online. It's my hope that you don't cycle for long - good for you that you've kept on your meds. Good luck at the doctors.

    When my wife was in labour I tried gas and air and it sent me sky-high! I would say it wouldn't be unreasonable that anesthetics could do the same- go and see your doctor just to be safe.

    Depends what type of anaesthesia you had - local anaesthesia (numbing) would not cause mania, but general anaesthetics (those that make you unconscious or drowsy) are psychoactive, and some of them could trigger mania. For instance, 'gas and air' contains nitrous oxide, which produces a euphoric 'high', making people laugh and feel excited.  Another anaesthetic - ketamine - is hallucinogenic, and could also trigger a manic reaction in bipolars. Best thing to do is find out the name of the anaesthetic (and any other drugs) you were given, and check them out with people here are on Wikipedia.

    yes there are triggers. For me it is people because i love people and socialising but it is mind over matter as well.  No two people are alike.  you have to fight hard for you with controling your mind.  I tell you without christ in my life I would not have made it.  I am so trusting the lord because i know who he is in me and I am in Him.  God created us as wonderful being and he has good plans for our lives if you believe His word.  So when i lost everyone from this disease except God, He became very intimate with me and gave me HOPE.  Either thru a sermon or an encouraging word from some one. Star reading the bible and give your life to Jesus thru a confession of your mouth. start in the book of Romans so if you do not already know that He is your righteousness.
