Ankle and lower leg pain after THR
Posted , 7 users are following.
Has anybody else out there experienced severe pain in the ankle, and pain right up the shin (same leg as THR). I mentioned this to my surgeon at my 8 week review, he ignored me. I saw my GP - she said it MIGHT be because of the THR, and left it at that. My new hip is marvellous, hardly any aches or pains, so it's very strange that I get this pain in the lower leg.
Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks Madeleine.

madeleine,
I am at 8 weeks and feeling good - just got off the cane to walk - was limping a little the past week.
I have had lower leg pain (behind knee and calve/shin) I emailed my surgeon's nurse and she said to apply heat. I can not put pressure on my op leg. I have 0 hip pain but now have lower leg pain. Its not consistent but feel hesitant to walk on leg. Gonna take today to keep it elevated and heat -
I have no bruises or swelling at all . It may be muscular or a strain - maybe from doing my excersises.

It's difficult when doctors ignore our questions. If he had taken a few minutes to answer you he could have given you less anxiety and better care.
I have had 2 THR. It can put a lot of stress on the rest of our bodies. From backs, necks, other joints and muscles.
Take me time to recover. THR is major surgery . Stay with exercises and address sore muscles with your Physio. See online more exercises.
i hope you can get better soon. If the pain you describe lingers address at the next dr visit and be adamant for a answer.
i really find it annoying when doctors ignor our complaints.mthats their job to help us understand THR and the many complex issues we face while heeling. After all we all chose this surgery for a better quality of life.

Hi I am experiencing severe pain in my ankle, the same leg as THR. At my 7 week review I was told it was plantar fasciitis, I've had that before and know this is different. My doctor just kept saying it was too soon to tell. No one appeared interested. Pain killers don't help, I have tried everything without any satisfaction.
i am now nearly 10 months post op and I told my doctor I wanted to see an orthopaedic surgeon. When I saw him he agreed with me about nerve damage to my foot. I have an appointment for a nerve conduction test on the 7th December. Eventually I May get some answers and hopefully some satisfaction.
hope you can get some answers Brenda C

Oooh I hate PF, it's so unbelievably painful. Your feet hurt your whol body hurts.
see a paid artist for a proper diagnosis for PF.
i hope it's not nerve damage. It's very rare after primary THR . I could be nerve impingment from surgery. Another suggestion might be to ask for a MRI I can help find tissue damage and the are special test to test for nerve damage. Then again mabe just rest and better shoes to start will help.
as we age our feet loose their ability for supporting us. The arches fall, we loose the fatty deposits for cushioning in the bottom of our feet. The tendon attached to the heel to the arch is what PF IS AND CAN BE A SMALL TEAR AT THE HEEL. Cortizone shots are a waiste of time and extremely painful without any numbing. If you have that as a option plz ask for freeze spray to numb the injection area.
Good od shoes and arches got me back on track food and toe exercises and good solid support arches in all my shoes.arches, marches arches.walkfit are amazing .
OK NOW I HAVE gone a bit too long there are so many alternatives to attack foot problems, it took me years to figure it out. At least you have a staring place.

Hi. Thanks for your concern, as I explained I have has PF and the feeling I have had since the LHR is a lot worse. At the moment all I am waiting for is the nerve conduction test in December. I'm walking without aid but I feel clumsy and have to walk slow to stop me falling. I can't wait to be able to walk with my rambler friends but how it feels right now this will never happen. I do see them on social activities but at the last meeting they were showing slides and giving certificates to all those who had completed the South Yorkshire way 98 miles, in stages, I was envious because I wasn't part of it.
keep in touch Brenda C

Could it be a vitamin d3 defiency? I had a lot of pain in my lower leg right one only and it was from missing vitamin d3. I haven't had my surgery yet it is coming up fast...22nd of this month.

From removal of natural bone and THR our brains take time to adjust to sending new signals to the brain from a new foreign object.
i have felt the awkward and impingment from early Helling.mi was lucky to have a excellent Physio therapist.
send well wishes for heeling and a big
for cheer!
