Hello , I was just wondering if there is anyone that has had a trimalleolar fracture and are back to really strenuous activity ? I want to become a police officer and am a 20 year old male , I broke my ankle in December 2017 and am now currently walking normally and fine and back to working out and starting physio. I am going to univeristy to complete a 4 year degree in electronics engineering and then want to become a police officer. Is there anyone that has broken there ankle and are police officers in this thread ? Any help appreciated.

    Hi Bobby!

I had a less complicated fracture, a spiral fracture of the fibula, but I had my final follow-up with my surgeon yesterday.  My break was on Nov. 20, 2017 and my surgery was Nov. 22, 2017.   He was very  happy with my range of motion and overall healing.   I told him I was nervous about activities like skiing and running.  He said my ankle will soon be as strong as it was before the break.    He said I am actually better off than if I had a major sprain because bones heal. Torn liagaments and tendons can be damaged so badly they might never recover fully.  So, since you are young, have had the bones all reset properly and are already starting to resume normal activities after a trimalleolar fracture, I think you will eventually be as good as new!  By the time you are a police officer, the ankle break will be a very distant memory.  Good luck!

I had a trimalleloar break and surgery in Aug 2016 I was 24, I'm a nurse myself so on feet constantly, was out of action for 7 months because job is so strenuous. Back to all normal duties now but still need pain relief when working long shifts, also get very stiff and painful in cold weather. Best advice I can give is when you are all healed make sure you exercise your ankle regularly always, I find if I have a lazy day or 2 it gets more painful/ stiff. I can't personally do 100% the level of running etc i did before, but everyone is different and pain thresholds different.  I still have all metal work in also x

    Hey Bobby,

The fact that you are walking fine now and have no apparent after-effects from your injury 4 months ago is a very good sign that you could have no lasting effects from it.  I'd chalk this happy news up to your youth and the likelihood that you didn't much soft tissue damage from injury (damaged tissue like ligaments, tendons, muscles, and the like are the nasty fly in the ointment in so many ankle patients' recoveries.

I would advise though that you keep up your ankle exercises and physiotherapy indefinitely to ward off any possibility of ankle troubles in future.

I'm sure there are a lot of active police constables with previous ankle injuries suffered either in line of duty or off duty. If they patrol on foot a lot they may or may not have lingering side effects from ankle mishaps.

In any case, when you sign up for the police academy you will no doubt undergo a complete physical and if you pass that you should be good to go if your ankle gives you no problems by then.

Law enforcement is a great profession and I wish you best of luck.
