Ankle Fracture - Walking Boot & Numb Toes

Hi there,

I fractured my right ankle on Saturday (lateral malleolus) and I'm in a walking boot with crutches. I've had on and off numbness in my toes since wearing the walking boot, but as of 24 hours ago, the numbness hasn't stopped. For most of today I took the boot off and stopped elevating my ankle hoping that would fix it, but it didn't change anything. I'm a bit worried that this could be a bad sign, or something more serious. Has anyone experienced this? Any advice? Should I be concerned?

Thanks so much!

Tamara

well if you just had it on Saturday and you're feeling numbness in your toes I don't think that's anything unusual. I'm going on 9 weeks for almost 10 after surgery and I get some numbness lot of pain. Are you going to have to have surgery or did you have surgery?. Are you going to have to have surgery or did you have surgery? It's a pretty slow process. After my surgery which didn't come till over two weeks after I broke it I was in a split Typecast and and I hated that and I hated that and I hated that because my foot would keep swelling up and it would be very very tight before the surgery they had me in the boot and at that point the book was not too uncomfortable. when I went back for my checkup after the surgery they took the split off and put me back in the boot which which way is much better because I could loosen it and take it off when my foot would swell and become uncomfortable. At that point I still wasn't able to put any weight on my foot. At that point I still wasn't able to put any weight on my foot. once it became weight-bearing then I started having more pain again but the numbness and tingling that is still going on in like I said I'm into 10 weeks after surgery that is still going on in like I said I'm into 10 weeks after surgery now. I am going to physical therapy and it is helping some. still have some swelling and taking short steps in the boot but to me I think I should be doing better by now. but when I look at other people's stories on here it seems but when I look at other peoples stories on here it seems like it's very similar to what I am going through. I think feeling the numbness in your toes is probably perfectly normal from what they tell me even though it's your ankle that's broken all the nerves in your foot or even though it's your ankle that's broken all the nerves in your foot or affected. and once in awhile I get these Stingers I believe they're called they're like real strong muscle spasms and they just they hurt but they only last a few seconds. it was kind of funny because I have a four-year-old and a two-year-old grandson and I was sitting with them the other day and all of a sudden I got those stingers and my foot kind of jumped up and they looked up at me like Grandma what's going on. good luck and try not to get discouraged, it can be a very slow process as I am finding out. everybody tells me though it will get better.

    Hi Tamara

The numbness and tingling is quite normal

I broke my ankle in July and had surgery

Im in PT now and still experience numbness and tingling

Id continue elevating and go between ice and heat on it I also do Epsom salt soak which helps

    Good luck!

Hi , Im going in 15 weeks post op. The top of my foot, and big toe is still numb. It takes months and months they told me in the hospital for all the nerves to come back. Keep moving and doing your excersises, it will all be ok, these ankle fractures are brutal and rehab takes time. I'm in a shoe ,but still on a crutch as the stiffness is still there. Hang in there.😊
