Ankle fracture with seven screws and a plate

Today makes one year to the day that I fell at a gas station and fractured my ankle. I’m planning to get the hardware removed in the next 2 to 3 months. It does bother me at times. This was quite a journey and setback
I'm wondering if most people are happy with the outcome after having the hardware removed

45 minute procedure
I went into OR 7:15 am and out of surgical unit by 9:00 am on my way home
Feels fine so far
Im back in boot for 2 weeks and FWB in the boot as tolerated
I go back in 2 weeks to have stitches removed and then hoping this chapter is closed
I was walking good but screw through back of ankle was interferring with my ROM
Good luck!

I can walk my dog but she pulls me so I'm still not doing it. I too walk up the steps fine It's going down that's the problem. Some days are better than others. I wish you well. Please keep us posted with your recovery. Good luck!

I slipped on ice Feb 2019 and had a trimalleolar fracture. This has been a very long road. Still don't feel normal. Doing most things. I don't walk my dog anymore. Coming down the steps still not normal. I feel more secure in shoes that go around my ankle. I think I will have screws and plate removed. I have been told that's more surgery and rehab. Not looking forward to that.

Part of the reason I had long screw removed was to improve my ROM
I cant go downstairs using both feet but can come upstairs using both
Hopefully Ill now be able to use both feet going down We will see in a couple of weeks
Im 6 months post op and back to majority of my activities just a little slower!
I volunteer at a dog shelter and have had no issue walking with them

hi all
i had removal of all of my hardware 3 months ago, which was a plate & 12 screws including the long syndesmosis screw after i had an ORIF for a nasty trimallelar fracture & dislocated ankle i sustained in March 2019 coming off a high step on a beach on my holiday in thailand.
I relieved to say that i have made a great recovery since all the hardware removal and can walk without a limp, can do stairs up and down at normal speed, and mainly im painfree now, unless ive spent more than 5 hours on my feet without resting at work, but painkillers resolve it.
I was reviewed by my orthopaedic surgeon last week who was pleased with my recovery,
and advised i should just avoid high impact activities like running/ jogging and only go back to him now if pain starts to badly bother me due to the arthritis now in my ankle due to the injury, which is a grade 2.5-3 at the moment, which is out of a score of 4. The next treatment then would be steroid injections for pain, im hoping that is a long way off fingers crossed .
