Ankle Fusion

I had an ankle fusion about 1&1/2 years ago,  I have 10 screws and a plate...  I was doing pretty good but the last few months my ankle has been swelling a lot... and my whole lower leg area also.. My socks cut in badly.  Has anyone else had this?  I know I am going to have some swelling, But this is crazy!  The left side of my ankle has a lot of pain and travels up my shin bone... OUCH!  Thank you for reading, any input would be greatly appreciated ...

    Hi Cheryl,

I had my ankle fusion 1 year ago I still get some swelling, however, I haven't worn socks for a while. I had my screws removed about 4 months after the fusion, you may need to go back and see the surgeon.

Hi Marian, I see you had screws removed. I’m scheduled to have my plate and 4 of the 6 screws removed on February 1st. He’s also going to clean up arthritis in my ankle. I was hit by a drunk driver April 22nd 2017 and all has healed but hardware is causing pain and limiting my advancement in walking/strength. Dr said I could be in a walking boot for 2 wks but nurse said I could be non wb for 6. I’m prepared for either but hoping for the 2 wk boot. How did recovery go for you and did you have the same hardware removed? Thanks for any help in this! I’ve been through the worst so I’m holding on to the positive!

      Hi Diane,

I only had 3 screws and all were removed, it helped tremendously, however, it was the worst operation by far, it took the surgeon a long time to find the screws as the bone had grown over them. My calf was all colours of the rainbow and I was in soo much pain. Thankfully he said take more pain killers, can;t remember how long I was back in boot for, don't think it was six weeks. Think maybe 2 and an xray to make sure bone was healing. Good luck
