Ankle fusion

I had an ankle fusion 7 weeks ago and have been in a cast, non weightbearing. Yesterday I had my cast removed and I was fitted with an Aircast boot. I expected more pain once I started semi weightbearing particularly around my ankle. However I'm having awful pain on the underside of my foot in the heel area. Although I feel more stable walking with crutches than hopping, non weightbearing I did not expect this pain. I cannot get upstairs as the pain is too much. is this normal or am I walking incorrectly with the Aircast

have you started physical therapy yet? maybe you are walking incorrectly. if you have started physical therapy then I would check with them if not then call your doctor. I am 9 weeks and I'm in the walking boot and I just started physical therapy today. I haven't had any pain really in the heel but all over the rest of my haven't had any pain really in the heel but all over the rest of my foot. my physical therapist told me today that I would be experiencing all different kinds of foot pain so it may be normal I don't know. maybe something to do if you have to walk up stairs maybe something to do if you have to walk up stairs. I am using a walker I didn't like the crutches and didn't do well with them. I had a wheelchair when I was non-weight-bearing.

thanks. I haven't seen a physio. I also used a frame when non weightbearing and a wheelchair. hopefully things will improve each day ( for both of us)

i think pain is normal after not walking for 7 weeks
im still in a boot after 10 weeks post op ive been in Pt 2 weeks and im walking in boot now with no crutches
im due to begin walking in two sneakers soon
my ankle was broken in 3 places its still a little stiff and working on range of motion
just be sure you are walking heel/toe and keeping your foot straight
i had pain in my boot on top of foot when i first began weight bearing it was so painful
but since PT ive been doing much better
good luck!

thanks. its encouraging to know it's normal! I was optimistically hoping it would be plain sailing once I could put my foot down!

i know its so frustrating waiting for it to feel better
for me the mental toll was a lot im a very upbeat busy person so this injury really affected me mentally
i think more needs to be talked about to address the emotional end of such an injury
im happy to say that im almost out of the boot and i can now drive, grocery shop, visit etc
so hang in there you are almost at the finish line!

I had an ankle replacement June 26 of this year and at six weeks I had my cast off and I could be full weight-bearing and they gave me an air cast but I could never use it due to a sharp pain being in my heel when I used it. I actually did better without the Aircast.

I have to use the Aircast as I have had a ankle fusion and I could do permanent damage if I don't at this stage!
I wasn't using my crutches properly, not letting them take my weight and putting too much weight on my heel. Now I am aware it is much better. Pain gives you a steep learning curve!
Hope you are continuing to recover well!
