Hi, I have had a ankle fusion on September 25th where i have had a lizarov frame external fixture fitted to grow the length of my leg,

The leg has fully grown and imm due to have the removed on the 23rd Fen providing the bone is strong enough to bare my weight - i have to walk a mile a daybed I'm struggling as the pin sites in the foot near the big toe cause so mu pain when i walk also my big toe is in so much pain daily and i don't know why and seems to be worse when its cold - anyhow I'm struggling to walk and wanted to understand if there were any techniques or better shoes i can wear to help me walk for longer periods so that i can strengthen the bone in my leg so this frame can be removed.   Thanks pictures attached

That looks like an instrument of torture! Your poor leg sad sad

I have never had to deal with such a contraption, and hope never to find myself in that position. I'm not sure what to suggest. Do you have a walker or something to help you with walking? That way you could walk a bit and then rest. I was also thinking about malls as a place to walk if it is too cold. I know of walking clubs that use indoor malls (especially in the early mornings) for their daily walks. Not sure if you would have access to that or not.

Thank you for your response, it was either this or have my lower leg amputated and didn't want to go through that. I have crutches and thats it - I was living in dubai and the warm weather was amazing for the healing and walking since coming back to London its been a nitemare, yes malls are such a good idea to walk around as they are warm you just get so many stares and its annoying .... thank you for your comments wink

I'd definitely look into borrowing a walker. Nice thing about the walker is it would allow you a bit more of a normal gait than crutches do (and you can control the amount of pressure too). As for malls (we have tons in Canada where I am), the walking clubs use them before the stores open or after they close; that would help with the staring issue (I was using an iWalk 2.0 for a bit and I know what you mean about stares). Wondering also about a fitness club with an indoor running track?

Do you have a home physio program you go through? I'm not sure what's possible with the frame... can you do toe rises or anything like that? Thinking if you had something that you could do at home in conjunction with getting out for walks that would be beneficial.

Best of luck with your progress and keep us all posted smile
