Ankle Fusion recovery - is pain normal

I had an ankle fusion on 17.02.20 and didn't weight bear for 11/12 weeks. I've been slowly walking since then (8 or so weeks) and feel as though now I am walking 'normally'. My main concern though is that I'm still in a lot of pain and find that I wake up every morning in pain and often have an aching feeling in my foot. Most of the bones in my ankle are too sore to press on and I find that the bones in the top of my foot near my toes are really sore. I know that I am using new joints that I probably didn't use a lot before my ankle fusion but I'm wondering if anyone had pain like this when learning to walk again and whether it is something that my foot gets used to and stops hurting. I know I'm still in the early stages of recovery and I probably need to relax about it but I'm not sure if I should go back to my surgeon and check in. He didn't give me physio as said I don't do sport etc so can just learn to walk and gain more mobility over time.

I didn't have an ankle fusion but I had a fusion on the joint of my big toe. In 2018. And yes, it still hurts daily. In cold weather, hot weather, hit it the wrong way, something hitting the area around the fusion and so on. Always pained. So long story short, I beleive you'll still experience pain from time to time while you are still in the healing stages. Takes up to a year and sometimes longer! I've even comtemplated lately to have my metal taken out becuase to me it shouldn't be this painful still. I've had second opinions and everyone says the same thing, it looks great! And I don't argue that because it does look great, but damn it hurts !

Good luck with yours! And if you're not comfortable and have thoughts of calling your surgeon, then give him/ her a call. It can't hurt! (No pun intended) 😃

    Good luck!
