    Mike,

It sounds to me like you sustained considerable ankle soft tissue injuries in your accident, even though there are no apparent fractures. In particular, damage around the talus would concern me.

I suffered a high grade sprain when I broke my ankle, but that doesn't even seem to even approach the problems you've got going on in your ankle. Your joint instability and edema (swelling) are sure signs you have ongoing serious issues following your trauma.

Cortisone is purely symptomatic treatment and can actually inhibit tissue healing.

Didn't your doctor put you in a CAM boot immediately following your injury? Have you actually been trying to walk and move around like your normal routine since your accident without some sort of support/protection for the injured ankle? If so, not good.

I would suggest that a good recovery for you depends on a highly competent practitioner who will recommend treatments to restore, strengthen, and stabilize your ankle joint-- and then only want to subject you to multiple ankle surgeries as an absolute last resort.

I wish you the best of luck and a happy outcome.
