Hi!

Has anyone had ankle ligamnet reconstruction surgery? I damaged my ligaments in Sept 14 and have been on crutches ever since. At the beginning of Dec I had my surgery and now 4 weeks on, the pain/restriction feels the sameĀ sad.

I would love to hear from anyone in the sme situation, or anyone who has any tips.

Thanks

Hi everyone, I have torn ligaments and was just wondering how long you's had to wait to have surgery?

I have been on the waiting list now nearly 10 weeks.

    Thanks

    Hi There

I broke my ankle in 3 places and dislocated it in Nov 15 I had a plate, seven screws and 9 bolts either side of my ankle. I had these removed due to excessive pain and swelling, so bad I could barely walk and I'm 25 and fit in Aug 16. I can honestly say this was the best descision I made for my ankle and road to recovery, although I have pain still (not as bad) due to requiring another op on my ankle to fix damaged tendons and ligaments.

Long story short my consultant has told me I require ligament surgery for my ATL and ITL (?) and I'm so worried about the recovery time, I was so depressed when I first broke my ankle. But even after my second op helping, the fact I have no ligs hardly means log walks with my dog and exercising are a no no due to the pain I encounter after. help!

      Hi KAY,

They will probably use donor tissue if you had nothing to work with. I had atl and peroneal tendon repair and cartilage repair. I had surgery dec 12 I've been in the boot for 12 weeks get it off tomorrow. I've seen some get out of their boots after 6 weeks. Don't rush things. It will all come in place.

I had my reconstruction (2 new ligaments, screws etc, nearly 6 weeks ago.

I have been in a boot for 2 weeks fwb.

Indoors I take the boot off and can sort of walk although it's extremely slow.

I also take the boot off at the gym to cycle about 2km on the very low resistance exercise bike. All without too much issue.

At night the pain wakes me every time.

Am I pushing too hard? Or does anyone get similar pain at night? Sometimes it's terrible.

Good luck to you all, big operation to have had.

Make sure you are elevating and Icing your ankle. I got a machine that iced all night long. Your going to expierence pain. Make sure your doctor is aware of what you are doing. It may be too soon. I'm 14 weeks post reconstruction and I'm only allowed max 20 minutes in the bike.

Hey there,I'm 5 days post op and I'm only taking aspirin because I've stood on it too much (it's too hard not standing I have 2 children lol) my surgeon gave me the all clear to lightly walk it's far less swollen than it was before surgery, the part that hurts a little is the cut pain -I have erbs palsy in my arm so I cannot use 2 cruch ''s or move a wheelchair by my self so lightly walking is my only option my ankle was on a half cast for 4 days and that's when it hurt the most as soon as it was in the moon boot it seemed very manageable I am from new Zealand I think doctors are not as carefull with recovery time become they can't get sued if it doesn't heal -aftl rupture reconstruction via bostrom and graft

I sprained my ankle badly around 50 years ago playing soccer in high school. Since then it's been unstable in that it can go out on me at times, but I managed to live with it. When playing sports such as tennis I wore an air cast. The last xray I had was about 30 years ago and the doctor remarked something like, "amazing, you have no ligatments and a bone floating around", he might have mentioned arthritis as well.

I still didn't have anything done because except for the occasional turning things functioned OK. Until about a week ago.

About a week ago I started experiencing a different kind of pain and instablity when walking around. Never had this before. My guess is that it's now time for reconstructive surgery.

Has anyone had reconstructive ankle surgery so long (or at least a long time) after the event that causd it? Or does anyone know what kind of results I could expect from waiting so long?

Thanks for any help on this.

May 12th I was playing baseball and as I stepped on 2nd base with my right leg the base moved and my left clear got stuck in the peg in the ground that the base straps to (freak accident)...as a result I dislocated my ankle, fractured my tibia twice and tore ligaments sad

At the hospital they put me under to put my ankle back in place and admitted me for surgery to repair my tibia and ligaments....I had surgery on may 14 (happy Mother's Day to me) they put a plate on both sides of the bone and used 9 screws to hold it in place. A temporary cast was put on for 2 weeks. And then I got a fiberglass cast for 4 weeks.

Today the cast came off and I now have the boot...the pain is excruciating!!! I have little to no feeling on both sides of my ankle where the incisions are. My foot is very tender, bruised and there's no arch on the bottom from all the swelling....is this normal?

Since I was home today I mainly laid on the couch without the boot and kept it elevated. I tried to just take extra strength tylonal but it didn't help at all!!

I was told to use the boot if I'm gonna be up and try to put weight on it....I just don't see how this is possible! I have 2 young children at home (they go to daycare when my fiancé is working as I cant take care of them by myself).

Any advice on how to help my recovery or help with the pain? I feel like I've been in tears all day.

I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and get my cast tomorrow. This is the worst pain ever and was told after 3 days Some patients could work. This Doctor is in crack. I can't imagine. I'm on short term disability and was hoping to be back at work in 6 weeks. From these posts sounds like I have a long journey before being fully recovered.

i update this post because my ligament surgery only had partial success.

stability improved but the foot remained very stiff, i kept using the brace too much.

i later started to put some pressure on the leg but overdid and caused stress fractures wich required the plastic boot (unconfortable) and crutches.

3 weeks ago i busted my ankle again, emergency cast and new diagnosis: bimalleolar and tarsal fracture. it's aligned so las wednesday i was plastered up to the groin and released 2 days later.

i have been told that no re-reconstruction will be performed on my ligaments.

i wonder how often people reinjure ligaments that had been repaired?

    will i recover?

hi Laura, I'm not exactly sure the name of the surgery I had, but I will tell you what the Dr wrote. i had a left ankle atfl and cfl tear and partial tear of the spring ligament. because of my ligament laxity they did a subtalar and talonovicular joint fusion. They reconstructed the tears and partial tear. I've been off my ankle for nearly 2 months. The first 2 weeks were the scariest and most painful, but the pain was nowhere near the pain I had when walking prior to this surgery. I am healing well. I say, hang in there and do exactly what the Dr says, even if its so frustrating not being able to do things for yourself. i hope you are coming along well!
