Ankle pain after Achilles surgery?

Posted , 2 users are following.

i ruptured my Achilles about two weeks ago, 5 days ago had surgery so I’m in a splint and have spend most of the day on my back with it elevated. I haven’t experienced any real pain in the area of the surgery, back of ankle along the Achilles.   Tonight I’ve been hit out of no where with a horrible pain but it is coming from the inside of my ankle, feels like the boot is pressing in on it.   The pain is so great it is blowing through 2 percosets taken 2 and 5 hours ago.  As I’ve been moving around try to find a position of relief I did notice my foot slid a tad in the splint, so I don’t believe this is any kind of extreme swelling.

Not sure why I’m feeling so much pain on night 5 vs the first 4?

Also not sure why the pain is so clearly coming from what would seem to be the wrong place.  I do realize the ankle and Achilles aren’t too far apart, this pain is just so pointed right on the inside ankle bone.

Any thoughts and or stories would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    HI Jason,

So sorry you are going through what we have all been going through. Its such a long process of healing, pain and frustrations!

You are most likely feeling more pain as you go because  of a few reasons.

If you had a nerve block it has worn off completely.

If you were taking stronger meds than aspirin .. your body will feel that, too

And don't forget you are healing... healing you start to feel every thing!

You will get aches and burning sensations, tightening just plain soreness as you go.

I honestly was having so much aching that I had to have my husband literally press on the scar area.

And every thing in your leg and foot will start to ache. You are using other areas maybe you haven't used so much.

Keep resting. You are very new into this injury and recovery process. You have a long way to go. Sorry to be a downer but honestly the VERY best thing you can be doing is NOTHING.. REST, REST and Elevate!

    Good luck to you!

Update -   I went in and the redid the splint.  Looks like what happened was my swelling went down so much that the splint became loose, causing it to slip a little.  At the end of the day as the swelling came back my ankle bones, the protruding parts of the ankle, weren’t lined up with where the splint was originally molded.  Making that bone feel like it was in a vice grip.  The moment they took the splint off it was relief.  I’ve been resplinted now for almost a day and I’m back to great!   Phew.   I’ve broken bones, had surgeries, played football and done mixed martial arts, that was the worst pain I’d ever been in.
