Ankle pain after TKR

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 8 weeks after TKR and get a variety of pains in my leg/knee when I walk. They vary daily but the worse pain is often in my ankle. Does anybody else get this?

My bend varies from 90 - 100 degrees but its agony to get beyond 90. I don't seem to improve so sitting for a long time hurts. Anybody else like this?

Thank you

    Hi Jennie!

You are still very early in your recovery. All the leg's parts are coming back from the assault on them from surgery. Even my surgeon said, "I did a lot of banging around in there" when I asked him about weird pains in my knee and leg.

Also, you are probably using different muscles in different ways than you have over your "pain years" when you had to compensate for pain by walking differently or having more of a bent leg movement.

Even almost a year later, my left leg (knee, ankle, side of knee, skin of lower leg etc.) will exhibit twinges, bee sting like feelings, sudden sharp pains that come then are gone quickly etc.

A lot of the pains are nerves coming back after THEIR trauma.

I find that TIME will lessen these pains. Healing takes a year or more, so what you are experiencing has been par for the course.

    Don't worry!😊

All very normal. You are still in the early early recovery stages. You might need new shoes if you didn't already get them. The foot lands differently now than before. It will all get better. Don't rush it.

Hi, Jennie. Yes, I have ankle pain too. I had left knee PKR year and half ago and TKR right knee four months ago. I think between the surgical recovery and walking to favor the painful knee, the ankles start rebelling. Everything shifts - now get sciatica on occasion, back twinges first thing in the morning, ankle swelling on extended car rides. I now have ankle pronation on the PKR side that is often more debilitating than the knee. It seems that everything is everything. BUT I have found wearing more substantial shoes giving more support helps a lot. I live in Florida so flip flops are our go to footwear. Not for me. No support allows ankle slipping especially on uneven ground. I'm not saying I wear Doc Martins but I do wear decent athletic shoes. That seems to really help, oh and forget those gorgeous 8" heels! As everyone here agrees...it all takes time and healing. If it hurts ( except PT and exercises-LOL!) don't do it. For the ankles the same helps: rest, elevate and ice. Good luck.

I had PKR right knee 7 weeks ago. I STILL have leg pain which includes the ankle. We definitely are walking differently after this surgery and I feel I'm constantly pulling different muscles. It's getting better. Just want you to know you're not alone.
