Ankle problems

hi I broke my ankle last year and dislocated my foot had a plate on broken bone and along screw to hold it all together, six weeks in plaster then boot until slowly back to work bur still painful and swollen , 4 months after injury happened I took surgeons advise and had long pin/screw removed , almost straight away my ankle bone started to move and sepetate and is very visibly sticking out on the inside of the ankle. So more X-ray and appointments with consultants say it is now unstable and will certainly get arthritis , and I need to have another operation to take out all original metal work and wire the bones tib and fib ( I think ) back together , you don't get a lot of time to ask consultants questions so I'm not very clear on wether to agree to this operation or not , as I'm self employed this would cause big problems as I do know it is at least six weeks in plaster . I'm in such a muddle knowing what to do , but ankle seems to be getting more painful all the time and I don't want to cause irreversible damage especially as a stand up all day any advice would be appreciated

Dear Wendy,
What a predicament indeed. I feel for you and hope for best possible outcome for you.
Proposed surgery is a big deal. Remember, you are entitled to get a second medical opinion. That's what I would do if faced by such a daunting proposal. Since your future mobility may hang in the balance it is in your best interest to be relentlessly insistent on finding best course of treatment. Don't settle for anything less that a successful outcome
Have you considered finding a sedentary occupation where you can sit all day and not worry about your ankle future as much?

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I am siding with @kpower on getting a second opinion. I just had my hardware removed this morning and did not even realized that it could result in unstable ankle. So I tried to picture myself in this situation and I would definitely opt for an extra surgery to prevent future arthritis. You sound pretty young and it would be a pity to let it happen. No money can heal arthritis. However, this is just my opinion. You should decide for yourself. I wish you good luck ans speedy recovery.
